How much do you have to be then to be offside? Or do we let marginal offside's go when they are for the sky 6?
Will this rule apply if England ever reach a World Cup final again and let's say play Brazil, Neymar is offside but scores, do we let that go because he's marginally off but plays for a bigger more successful team, causing England to lose? Would that then be ok?

The whole situation is farcical. You're either offside or not - there can be no 'well it's close, so the goal should have stood' - and regardless of whether the linesman saw his foot offside, or thought he was a yard offside - he was offside, the linesman called it correctly, end of debate. Otherwise, we suddenly have a situation where being fractionally offside is actually onside. Reverse the situation and Wenger is praising the linesman for doing a great job.
In the articles you're referring to, they have been written by 2 different people who obviously have differing views.

It's impossible for most fans and managers to have an unbiased opinion on occasions like this. Pity that Dermot didn't emphasise that this is the case and on this occasion, actually say that Arsene was wrong |

To be honest, if that decision was against us I'd have been pretty pissed off. I'm not a ref, linesman or expert and the rule on offside has clearly changed without me knowing. The lads boot, was ahead of the defender, not his body/ torso, is this how the rule?
If so then it's offside but if this is the rule then I don't like it. We want more goals in the game not less. Surely it's easier for a linesman to judge by using a body rather than a stray boot or leg?
I'm glad we won obviously but would hate a decision like this to go against us.
For sure, the gods were with us last weekend as they had a couple of penalty shouts too. I'm pretty certain that if the opposite had have happened we'd have all been having a right good moan?

I agree with most of this. There is some sense regarding " you cannot score a goal with your shoulder " So other than arms / hands any other part of the body would have meant he was onside? To play devil's advocate, footballers make very, very quick movements. We always trust the TV coverage to stop the footage at exactly the moment a pass was struck when analysing whether a player was offside, but in very marginal cases like this, can we really know?
With both Lacazette and Pieters (I think it was Pieters, can't be arsed to check now) moving at high speed in opposite directions, stopping the frame even a few hundredths of a second sooner or later could be the difference between a scenario where a player looks offside and doesn't.
In any case, it was a week ago, we won the match, that's all that matters. Let's stop worrying about it and move on to the next one.

I think it's ruined the drama in sports like cricket, where they have reviews for decisions and they get overturned because of Hawkeye. I dread to think how many great moments in sport would have been ruined by modern technology. In fairness, I thought Lacazette had scored a legitimate goal at the time, but I don't remember as much fuss being made when Arnie had one ruled out (against Villa?) in similar circumstances a couple of years ago. |

To be honest I hope we get another 10 games like it against the Arsenal there's nothing quite like them feeling there's been a huge injustice.
Next game I hope the ball cannons of mark Hughes hands whilst he's stood in the penalty area 10 yards offside with his shirt off and the lino doesn't see it. I think we'd then genuinely see wengers head fall off.

How can you complain against a correct decision? I think the answer lies somewhere in the question: if it was the other way around and Stoke had lost a point to a correctly ruled out goal, would it have even been mentioned?
We have lost to many clearly incorrect decisions over the years, Ryan Man - City, Bojan against Arsenal Annie West Ham yadayadaya, none ever get this level of coverage, and they were cut and dry incorrect.

They definitely favour the big clubs, and there are too many examples of that bias to even think about bringing them up! I guess you could always avoid MOTD, though! |
