The police have been encouraging the use of dash cameras today, and I think it's about time I took a closer look at them. Does anyone have any recommendations, tips on what to look for and what a sensible price range would be for a decent camera that works well in low light?

Nextbase 312 GW seems to be ok. Took about an hour of research to arrive at that. Good in low light, GPS , speed camera recognition, your speed plus other stuff. Around £95. There are much more expensive and much cheaper but this one seems to cover most bases. It can be hard wired as well, however that works. Garmin seem to be the top end at around the £200 to £250 mark. All new territory here as well so it'll be interesting to see what people come up with.

I highly recommend anyone who does a lot of driving gets a dashcam. They can be invaluable in the case of an accident by helping to prove who was in the wrong. I have my own story so more on that in a moment.
Just about all dashcams these days will record in HD and there aren't many poor ones around any more. Most will do the job very well and there's no need to spend more than £100. I have a Garmin 55 with GPS logging. Bear in mind that some insurance companies will need full GPS data to pay on a claim and won't always accept a video by itself.
You just plug the unit into your 12V socket or you can have it hard wired to the battery terminal. My dashcam is hard wired together with a Motorola 2 way radio system for communicating with tanker and tractor drivers etc at work. It takes an installer about 30 minutes and it's a much neater setup once done with no visible wiring.
Back in March I pulled up behind someone at the traffic lights on the Leek Road in Buxton. While I was stationary this young lad in front decided he would reverse his crappy Renault Clio into me. Bang! The punk got out feigning injury and claimed I had rear-ended him. There were several dents and some bad scuffs to my front bumper and the same to his rear bumper. Before I pointed out the presence of my dashcam I made sure I got his insurance details so my company (as it's a company car) would be claiming off him, not the other way around. After I got all his details I pulled the camera off the windscreen and replayed the video clip to him. You should have seen his face. He scarpered like a bat out of hell. But the £1100 damage he caused was repaired and paid for by his insurance company on the basis of my dashcam evidence which I sent to his insurer.
The moral of the story: get a dashcam. It not only protects you against genuine accidents by genuine people, but also reckless drivers and insurance fraud.

Just an aside. I got rammed at some traffic lights in northern Manchester. I was stationary and the lights turned to green, bit slow pulling away, and the guy behind me hit me with a fair old bump. His was a works car, but I'm sure he did it because I hadn't pulled away quick enough. He admitted liability but we never got the claim sorted for some reason. He seemed quite honest, but he bloody well wasn't. Like I say though, I'm sure he did it on purpose!

Also got a transcend drivepro 200 at the front , which I would say is slightly better BUT I don't think it includes GPS.....I did not realise what auntie says about insurance companies but I would have thought that If it was set up properly , with date and time, it would be good evidence( you will know as much s me about that as you are exMet). I have mine hard wired which I would recommend But there can be difficulties...i used a reliable trustworthy, good reputation, garage that I have been with for 20 years and it took a day and a half because breaking into a suitable wire involved not messing the computer system of the car up....also they have told me that they have had to rectify a few that had been wired in because they had not had the voltage reduced from 12v to 5v....wiring kits available on Amazon. I think that they should be standard on new cars. I have noticed that a good number of cars that get close up behind me drop back compared to pre camera, and I presume that they have noticed the camera......but I think Waggy probably knows a bit more about rear ending than me.

I've done a bit more homework and the Nextbase 312GW still holds its own against the competition. Are you pretty happy with yours still.

Yes very happy...easy to use.....it just kicks in when I start the car. I've had it perhaps forabout a year and have had no incidents so I tend to ignore it. I have played back a couple of events of "bad driving " ..that did not involve me...eg clearly, not marginally, going through lights on red, causing other driver to stop and playback was fine.....I suppose the use of them raises the issue of whether we should report some bad driving.....what are the implications of that. As I said earlier I slightly prefer the transcend 200, but that might be because I had it first.....I think Halfords were doing a deal on the Nextbase when I bought it.

There's a deal on Amazon includes the camera, hard wire kit,32g sd card and carry case. £128. Seems reasonable. (312GW)
