I do agree but We've only got zouma for one season and injuries and suspensions will bite at some stage Maybe he's thinking long term We shouldn't have signed Zouma then. And yes we would have been short......sign BMI sooner. It makes no sense. maybe it does make sense today ?

Hughes also said this though. “Kevin is only 24, and we feel that he has a lot of development to come, which was part of the attraction to him,” he added. “He understands that he needs to play, these are key years for him, and he wanted the opportunity to play more regularly, which he is hopeful will happen here. “He has tremendous ability, a great range of passing and is a big strong guy. He adds to the quality we have at the back.” Doesn't really sound like the 'For the future' quote.. And we know what that usually means, play with kids until your ready, go on loan never to be seen again. Does it?

I think it is quite possible that Wimmer will start at CB. I wouldn't have expected Hughes use today's press conference to tell Mourinho who his back three were going to be. His comments leave the question open - which is how it should be. Presonally, I think Cameron will probably start at RWB. Much as I have appreciated Diouf in several games, he should probably have given away a penalty against Arsenal and he could well do so against Man U if played at RWB.

Who at 24 should really be the finished article, especially for 18m. It's a very strange turn of phrase to use. Especially as he is such a good defender already.

I find some people over analyse things and always look for the worst outcome, I think you do it quite a lot. We now we have Zouma for one season, Hughes probably wants to adapt Wimmers play to how he wants him to play and this season gives him that chance on the training ground and in matches to do so.

Not sure when Wimmer last started a football match but I guess Sparky hoped to ease him in against less potent opposition than this, it will be a torrid early evening for our defence who will really get put through the ringer.
Conversely I suppose they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Incidentally Sweeney apparently scored a wonder goal in training for Ireland U21s the other day. The future may be bright as far as our CBs are concerned - thanks to excellent succession planning!

Also shows how light we are in that Cameron is the back up For right wing back (totally unsuited to that role) centre half and centre mid.

Chuck him in. He is a pro who must be good we would hope for that money. A game like this is a damn good start and if i was him I'd be banging the manager's door down to get picked and quite right too

I like Cameron but there's surely no way we've signed an £18 million centre back to play back up to him. I expect Wimmer to start along with Zouma and Bruno.

Yes I agree Bayern, the twitter quote in isolation sounds odd to say the least, that's why I posted what I saw on SCFC. With the extra quotes it sounds more balanced, and not like we've bought school boy.

I don't believe for one moment that a 24 defender should be the finished article. I read the comments as meaning that he already has a lot of quality and, at 24, can still get better. It's also a bit of a warning shot to Wimmer too - that we do expect a lot from him and expect him to work hard in training.

Especially as he is such a good defender already. 24 is nowhere near finished article phase for a centre-back. It's the equivalent of a 20/21 year old striker. CBs often don't peak until a few years after they turn 30 as strength and experience are such big attributes for the position, and the best combination of both won't be until they're maybe 32 or 33. But I do agree that it's strange to view Wimmer as "one for the future" at 24. At that age, a potentially top-class player who still has a great deal of development ahead of him is definitely a first-teamer (or thereabouts) for a club like ours. We aren't an elite club, we don't have the benefit of being able to buy proven, top-class players at the absolute peak of their powers. We have to be a club that proves itself an excellent stepping-stone for young players with aspirations of eventually reaching the highest echelons.
