If Whelan had played like that he'd have been slaughtered. Absolute bollocks

Thought he was our best player, reads the game exceptionally well.

If Whelan had played like that he'd have been slaughtered. Got caught in possession frequently but showed some drive (the only drive) going forward from midfield The important thing is, unlike Whelan, Fletcher didn't lose possession. Different class of player.

When he did get caught on the ball it was because of little to no movement in front of him. The difference between Fletcher and Whelan is, Fletcher actually wants to pass the ball forward and not take the safe option all the time.

I was very quick to slate this signing because of his age and but not his ability. Yes it's his first game but it certainty doesn't look like his age has caught him up. We could do with a few more Man United cast off's in his mould please.

Have to admit I wasn't enthused with his signing, however watching the first half yesterday I thought he played really well (missed the second half) and could be a great addition.

Different class of player. Actually he did fairly regularly yesterday. Comfortably more so than Whelan. Still looked good though.

😂 people comparing Glenn Whelan to Darren Fletcher.
Without needing to get involved in that, Fletcher absolutely dominated the first half. Won the ball back on numerous occasions and kept trying things going forward, spreading the play, getting their defenders turned etc.

He was excellent I thought.
We were outnumbered in midfield .
Allen did quite well too

Look out for two recurring DF themes as the season develops.... Takes too many touches. Gives the ball in dangerous midfield positions. Fuck off. You Brazilians were apoplectic when We snaffled him earlier this summer. Don't come with the 'well he was shite anyway and we didn't really want him' bollocks now. Stick to slagging off Berahino you sad act.

He is a good player who would have worked perfectly alongside Whelan.
We are only one game in and we have already conceded a goal that Glenn would have blocked off.

Glenn Whelan wouldn't have done a thing about it.

Walters would have scored today. You mean like he did in the same fixture last season when Arnautovic put one on a plate for him?

You can still see the Ferguson/United class in Fletcher's play.
He might have lost a yard of pace but like all good midfielders he has space and awareness.
The times he did lose possession he had two Everton players chipping away at him whilst Stoke players stood and watched giving him no support.
I think he will prove to be our main man this season...

With his pedigree it's no surprise he looks comfortable on the ball and is a definite upgrade on Whelan. But instead of looking for a Whelan replacement we will be looking for a Fletcher replacement...how many years has he got at this level? He's just a couple of weeks younger than the man he replaced.

Well worth his place in the team.

Thought he was our best player Likewise, very solid display. Kept possession ticking over nicely, broke up play and filled in the gaps, everything you'd expect from him really. Excellent bit of business from the club.

Although internet comments may not not the best way of gauging the sentiments of football fans, the consensus of Albion fans' opinions would be far from outraged imo. Check out the last 5 pages of this thread - especially the comments before there was any hint of a move to Stoke. westbrom.com/forum/index.php?topic=15590.0Pre transfer examples: "The guy needs releasing, the only person holding us back more than Fletcher is the one who insists on picking him every game. Hopefully the reason he hasn't signed a new contract yet is that he has a bit of dignity and knows his time is up." "He'll be here next season there's no worries there, no other club would be stupid enough to pay him over £50k a week, his legs are gone. Yet another fabulous plot of our great manager to play him for so many games this season despite him being dire for the majority to trigger the automatic extension." "The thought of him trundling around the midfield for another season as our top earner is dreadful or worse still 12 months of that followed by 12 months of bench warming in the Championship. " I don't have to slag SB off, as you Oatcake guys seem to have cornered the market.

I thought Fletcher is just what we needed in midfield, someone calm and collected, who can pick a range of passes. I thought he was class on Saturday and in every friendly I was able to get a stream of. Other players just need to make themselves available, when the opposition try to crowd him out. Koeman clearly told them to close him down fast, as he ran the show in the first half.
