Diouf then Joselu then Bony and now Berahino. Why have they all failed as strikers here mate? Either Hughes is consistently making terrible choices with the forwards he brings in, or he can't actually set his team up to create chances for his forwards. Either way it's a pretty damning. Play Shaq as number 10, Sobhi on the left , Maxi on the right? We might see some fucking creativity! H Oh indeed. But he'd have to play a back four to do that though and he seems fully intended on going with a back three. I mentioned it earlier in the thread mate, he's painted himself into a corner with his recruitment ... again.

Why pay 12M for a player who hasn't be playing for years and shot on confidence?
Feel for him, we should be starting Joselu or Crouch for me.

Sadly I don't think we can afford to sit on our hands any longer making excuses for him. He's had a pre-season, he's match fit, but we're getting very little from him and he's done nothing in any of the friendlies to suggest he's about to turn the corner. People keep saying that we're not playing to his strengths, but what are his strengths exactly? He's not very big, he's not fast, he's poor in the air and based on the evidence we've seen so far, not very good at finishing either. Crouch would be starting next week for me, with Joselu on the bench. Diouf then Joselu then Bony and now Berahino. Why have they all failed as strikers here mate? Either Hughes is consistently making terrible choices with the forwards he brings in, or he can't actually set his team up to create chances for his forwards. Either way it's a pretty damning. I think it's a bit of both to be honest. The one man he knows how to utilise is Peter Crouch, and to be fair Crouchy's played the best football of his Stoke career under MH and has a decent scoring record under him. I've always said that if we're playing a lone front man that we need him to be decent in the air and hard to knock off the ball as we're simply not good enough to establish a gameplan based only on pretty passing and tip-tapping the ball around. We need someone we can knock it long to if needs be, but someone who is also good enough on the ground to get involved if we are playing on the floor in any given moment. Berahino isn't that player, and although I tried to be optimistic about it working out (thinking about how Defoe managed to perform a lone role for Sunderland) I do wonder what the hell Sparky was thinking while chasing him for so long. I think getting back to the idea of a big lad up-front and a more mobile player (or two) behind him has to be our gameplan. Joselu has his faults (he's a bit of a fairy for a bloke of 6'3) but I'd rather we give him another shot rather than try to persist with someone who doesn't seem to have any discernable attributes that we can base our attacking play around. I really hope that Hughes doesn't stubbornly keep persisting with Berahino to try and justify his interest and outlay because there's only one place that will lead to IMO.

He can't afford financially or jobwise to show he's got another flop.

Managers see their jobs as only temporary and Hughes is bucking the trend as far as the Prem goes. If he goes he's repaired his cv, points to lack of backing and walks into the next job. Meanwhile as usual we'll still be here.

Would it be a bold or completely crazy move to consider loaning him out? Could goals at a lower level get him going somehow? I really don't know what to think. He's just showing so little in any aspect of play. It can't be long until he's dropped, and I don't know where he would go from there, confidence and playing time-wise. He has already been down the loan route at WBA, with mixed results. Twice he was sent back to the Albion for unspecified attitude problems. I cannot readily think of any newly purchased £12m player being loaned out (from a club of SCFC's size and resources) for experience/confidence. All the questions in this thread about what SB's strengths are mirrors the comments from WBA fans during his decline at the Hawthorns. And no, I don't know what these elusive talents would be either. I remain incredulous that a manager with Hughes' experience has saddled himself with such a high cost, high maintenance player of such dubious abilities. Could this be MH's final bad purchase?

What was he doing right when he first burst into the team? And can you put your finger on when the decline actually started? Was it directly related to the Spurs thing? Am I right in thinking he was physically a lot leaner, much more like the young Michael Owen than the bulkier player he developed into? He just looks so bereft at the moment - just offering zilch

So you think he's earned the right to have even more money to spend on a new striker then, even though EVERY SINGLE ONE he's brought here so far has failed? Just how many chances does he get to actually finally get it right?

The problem is not only that Berahino don't score goals, but he also does not play well. How many points have we lost because of this Berahino experiment in these 14 matches his played? And how many more are we set to loose?

We didn't need Berahino and Mark Hughes will end up being sacked because of signings like his.

If the manager then decides that, actually, he wants to spend all of that money on a new striker to replace the £12m one he shouldn't have bought in the first place, well, that's his call. Nobody, not even someone largely supportive of Mark Hughes, could sit here and argue that he's got a brilliant record signing strikers because he hasn't. His record so far is pretty shite. However, if Coatesy wants Hughes as manager then he has to let him get on with using his budget as he sees fit and have faith that he'll spend it wisely.
