It's not surprising that Ryan doesn't look the same player since being injured - his manager hasn't got a clue how to set up a defence. Our defending has been going backwards since Hughes arrived. Selling Huth was an almighty mistake. We can't defend corners, we can't defend free kicks, we can't defend in open play. Shawcross looks around in despair at times desperately trying to cover so many holes. I reckon Marc Wilson was correct.

Not a prayer Hughes will sell our captain to a rival of ours. What makes you so sure? Why would he sell our captain to a rival unless he had someone better to replace him? Only way he would sell him is if we saw BMI and Gibson come in

Love Ryan, but if he isn't going to fully recover from his back problem, we need to cash in,but only if we bring in a replacement first.

I could cope with Zouma and Muniesa. Ryan really needs to step up. Not a chance, I love Muniesa's attitude but he isn't a first choice CB for a mid table premier league club, for a newly promoted club maybe but it is a risk. Cameron should be ahead of him, and I have my doubts about Geoff as first choice CB too. Zouma and Bruno would do though I would be sad to see Ryan go, he has been our best player and so loyal too.

What is it with claret and blue teams wanting all our players all of a sudden?
We'll probably sell and hope we get BMI in…...

He has zero discipline which makes him a liability as a defender. At least he has a back, can pass a ball, can dribble a ball, can shoot, can head a ball and can put a tackle in. He has a back? Are you suggesting that muniesa isnt injury prone? He may be able to do all those things to a point but whats the point if hes running after the ball up front when hes supposed to be at the back?

Has anybody thought the problem may lay with Stoke maybe only wanting to offer two years due to his back
And Ryan wanting maybe four years

I'm really not. I'm saying he's a decent defender. Which is exactly what he is. He has zero discipline which makes him a liability as a defender. That just isn't true. I saw him play a full 90 minutes at Goodison with a £75million rated Lukaku in his pocket. The problem is with Hughes and out defensive issues is EXACTLY the same as the problems he creates up front. He is FOREVER changing the starting lineup and completely fails to link defender and attacker. New season, new start so I will back Hughes. However, if he just does as he always does and did last season I want him fucked off pronto! There was a game last year, where Muni came back in the team after a long absence. Now you would think that such a HUGE change to your starting backline would have been the result of strategic planning so assured that come game day we would be a finely tuned outfit. Muni would have been able to build up to the game and the team were understanding of how he was to fit in and therefore then able to adjust to his place in the team...NO he found out 5-10 minutes before ever fucker else in the ground! That is Shit management whichever way you cut it and it stinks! No surprise we shipped the batterings we did.

I've been an advocate of seeing us get a replacement / serious competition from Ryan for a while now. It was abundantly clear a few months after he returned from injury that he'd never be the player he was (to much frothing at the mouth on here). But we've just lost two big squad members that held the hard work ethic that Pulis instilled into them and into the club. Losing Ryan as well as them would be a step too far in my opinion. Especially to fucking Burnley.

We're stupid but we're not this stupid surely? Well with his contract situation we're sending out a flashing neon sign which says , 'We don't rate our captain, come and make us an offer' So no we are that stupid! We are stupider!

Ryan is the backbone of side like it or not - he might not be the test player technically but I think people are forgetting the strength of character of this guy, he's a leader a true character of the club. For people to turn round and say 'bye ryan' is crazy this guy has been our rock at the back since the championship. He'd leave a huge gap in our dressing room if he left.

Why would he sell our captain to a rival unless he had someone better to replace him? Only way he would sell him is if we saw BMI and Gibson come in Although it's slightly different to the Arnautovic transfer, you might find that once he knows there's interest he might want to go whether or not Hughes wants to sell him. It's up to the player nowadays and if Burnley offer him a 2/3 year deal then he might think it's worth it. Don't forget about Walters and Bardsley being there either.

A lot of people saying Shawcross is past it here, but I really think we need his experince and aerial strength as well. A lot has been said about him as the captain, but Ryan is the one to organise our defence in the best way. I would really like to see him given a contract till he is 32, and then we can decide if he still is worth keeping. Central defenders seem to keep on playing for a longer time these days, so maybe he could keep it up till he is 36-37 as well. Give our captain a contract extension I say!

Actually wouldn't be shocked if we got rid and didn't replace him - like every other position

Ryan isnt even old though. He needs to get over his back problems that hindered him last season.
BUT 10m or whatever it would be would just be a wank amount of money for someone of his experience, loyalty and skill in the Premier League.
I dont think hes a natural leader on the pitch but hes still our club captain.
Most Chelsea fans wanted John Terry to stay there at the ripe old age of 36, but most of our fans are ready to feck off Shawcross with no replacement in sight!!!
Whats going on down Stoke?

Difficult to imagine watching Ryan play for another team now.
I hope we can agree a new contract that works for both parties and he stays at Stoke City. Pretty sure that's what both parties want.
By my reckoning it will be 10 years next week since he came here and he'll go past 400 appearances for the club this season.
He may not be quite the force he once was, but this is still a 7/10 player minimum every week who rarely lets us down. He's more than a player though - with Whelan and Walters gone, he's the heart and soul of the team.
What a journey we've shared. Plenty more memories still to be made I hope. I'll be much happier seeing the big guy leading the lads out at Goodison in a week's time.

Great marker, makes loads of blocks and tackles and wins his headers. Big physical presence. He's a proper Premier League defender. With Jack and Fletch he's going to be the solid spine of the team this season. I would be surprised if he wants to leave or the club want him to go. Just need to find a compromise that works, but if I was the club, I'd try to meet Ryan's wishes as a reward for his loyalty. I'm sure there will have been times in the past he could have done an "Arnie".

Muni is not a 1st choice centre back, I'm not completely convinced he is a centre back at all, we need to disabuse ourselves of this crackpot idea and get Ryan signed up to an extended contract before we make even more trouble for ourselves than we already have.

Even if Bruno comes in, we'd be one injury away from a makeshift defence. Even if he runs his contract down, I wouldn't be letting him go anywhere this season.
