Take your pick, we have neither. Agreed. So we need to sign these players whichever formation we are going to use. We do but for 3 at the back they're the most important players.

We have just extended contracts for two full backs that cannot play as Wingbacks. If 3 at the back was a genuine option and desire of Hughes then the extensions make zero sense. I get 4-3-3... an isolated striker up top hasn't worked for two years!!!! Do as you have always done yet expect different results is the sign of insanity. I for one do not want to face yet another year of desperate forward play that resorts to long balls from Ryan after we've fucked about passing it 3 or 4 times around our defenders. With Fletcher, Allen and Delph in the middle we will outwork most teams and will be able to play a high line but in playing one up top we'd be mental!!!!

I'll eat my own arse if Hughes plays 352. It'll be 4231 and rightly so! People are seeming to be forgetting that he's had a dabble at three at the back over the last two pre-seasons and nothing came of it. If we sign BMI I don't see that as a clear indicator either; the crop of CBs currently aren't strong enough and we have no depth there. BMI signing will just be to add strength and depth. It's the 'dabble' that makes me think he really wants to make it work. Nothing came of it because he didn't have the right players. He still doesn't but he could be working on it. I still think Allen might make a right wing back. That's where the hard-working runners go these days. And it'll be interesting to play "Guess the Formation" in the Championship for 18/19!

I like 4231 but I think he'll go for a 433 with Bera playing behind the main striker with Shaq. With a new mobile but pacey striker leading the line.

We need to develop an identity not cave when it doesn't work. As I said, do as we have always done and no one will get 15+ goals. My Plan B would be more pace. Replacing Shaq or Bera with Diouf or N'Goy or giving youth a chance, similar to how Rashford was introduced. The youth have the fearless tendency that sometimes gets goals. I rate Crouch and if I was going 4-4-2 then he would be on the bench then for a change to plan B 4-4-2 when you go little and large.

Last season we played 4231, 433, 343, 352 and then back to a 4231.
Expecting similar but perhaps in a different order this time around.
Causing maximum problems for the opposition.
*would love us to do a full on 343 front foot Cup run.

I say we go all out attack and do a 0-2-3-5 Butland Zouma - Shawcross Imbula - Delph - Fletcher Shaqiri - Bojan - Berahino - Verlinden - Sobhi The opposition will surely be bamboozled at such a formation We will become the first team to collect zero points from 38 games and the first club to concede 200 goals before the end of November. We will become unforgettable.

I think our problem last year was that we were unable to link with our forward players. Allen as a number 10 didn't work, the ball didn't stick. Delph will do that better (obviously if he signs) and Allen as a ball winner works better for me.

I'm not saying it won't happen but that team has a far too defensive balance for me. I just don't really want to watch a team that will only field 3 players dedicated to attack. I know its a temptation given that we have suffered some heavy defeats but I really think its a blind alley, being better in possession at the other end of the pitch is IMO the best way to make the game easier for our deeplying midfielders and defenders.

Sorry, I understand your point. I think Delph is far more a box to box player personally and it's certainly the role that he played in his best year at Villa. Leave Fletch to protect with Allen as his legs and then Delph to do the N'Zonzi role.

N'Zonzi is/was a deeplying midfielder who generally played with a No10 (CAM or what ever you want to call a player who plays centrally behind the striker) in front of him.

Whelan was the deeplying mid and N'Zonzi was our box to box that carried the ball out and linked defensive play to attack. In a 4-3-3 Delph would be the main man in our team and he would relish it! Just my opinion Alster.

I think whatever way you look at it the full / wing backs are the weakest area still either with 4 at the back or 3. Although the prospect of Tymon as a wing back seems promising.... with Diouf bossing the other flank :-D
