I think Hughes will go 3-5-2.
I don't see Berahino as a lone striker
(although L'ilfraise will disagree!), so unless Hughes goes and forks out for one 4-2-3-1 might be ditched?
There are so many questions about personnel that I don't know what our best formation is. What do you hope for and what do you fear?

Personally I find managers that who play 99% of their games with same approach (TP & Wenger for e.g.) regardless of any other factors (like the opposition)
do my head in.
I guess you want a settled back line especially but you do need flexibility.

It'll also point to playing Johnson and Pieters at wing back, which is alarming, as is the prospect mooted on here of playing Diouf and Ramadan in those positions. Personally I find managers that who play 99% of their games with same approach (TP & Wenger for e.g.) regardless of any other factors (like the opposition) do my head in. I guess you want a settled back line especially but you do need flexibility. They do have a plan B but the best teams generally have one of playing and let the opposition worry about that. Now I know we're not one of the best or will be but we've got to have one main way of playing nailed. We don't have that. I think with the squad we currently have, he'd be mad to go with 3 at the back. We'd need to sign a right back, left back, BMI and keep Muni for me to even think it's much of an option. |

To play 3-5-2 the best players on the pitch have to be our wing backs and I would say that's our weakest area, 4-2-3-1 for me!

People are seeming to be forgetting that he's had a dabble at three at the back over the last two pre-seasons and nothing came of it.
If we sign BMI I don't see that as a clear indicator either; the crop of CBs currently aren't strong enough and we have no depth there. BMI signing will just be to add strength and depth.

Chances are he sees Berahino at left back with shawcross and Zouma at centre back, crouch as a sweeper and no right back. Midfield 4 of Fat Charles, Diouf sitting deep pulling the strings, whilst grant runs box to box and Walters resigns for a club record fee and plays as an attacking midfielder. Front two of Fletcher and Allen with shaqiri, bojan and Imbula ostracized because they argued that grant is a goalkeeper, but having tried him out on FIFA in midfield, Hughes disagrees. All in all, the formation would be a 1-3-1-2-1-2.

At home, I think he wants to play an attacking 4-3-3. I remember being surprised when the team that beat Man City at home featured Shaq, Bojan, Marko and Affelay. This was also the formation that put 6 past Liverpool, with Fonzi putting in a stellar box to box display and Adam a bit further forward. He also obviously loves 4-2-3-1, and maybe Fletcher and Cameron/Allen holding in front of the back 4 might allow Bojan the free role that would suit him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him go 3 at the back either, with or without BMI. Again, the spare man might just be Wollschied's best role - I think he reads the game well. Marc Muniesa could also do that. The biggest challenge will be to get Berahino into the game. An extra attacking midfield player, no 10, second striker whatever you want to call it might be the way he does this. |

That will come wherever Shaq plays. He has the ability to knock those passes into dangerous positions to invite the attacker onto the ball. The key to more goals this season might be the understanding between those two. And if all else fails, Shaq can just twat it with that pearler of a left foot of his!
If I was MH I would definitely be encouraging him to shoot more. If we stay in games he has the ability to win matches on his own. See Hull City away last season...
I understand that Bojan looked a bit more like his old self after a few games at Mainz at the end of last season. If he gets anything like his form back he will be an asset for us.
As always Al, can't wait for the season to start. Got a feeling it's a good time to catch Everton a bit cold before their new team gels.

I'm not entirely sure they're stronger than last season. Looking forward to the season too whether that be with some exciting new signings or watching a couple of the youngsters get their chance. It's the 'dabble' that makes me think he really wants to make it work. Nothing came of it because he didn't have the right players. He still doesn't but he could be working on it.
