www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-40416237Sandeep and Reena Mander said they were told by Adopt Berkshire that white British or European applicants would be given preference as only white children were in need. --- Not sure how I feel about this, I can understand why it's important to match heritage and such but surely it should also matter what kind of lifestyle they can be given?

"We have a five-bedroom house with four spare bedrooms."
So clearly quite well off and could give a real good lifestyle to someone...

I suppose heritage and the possibility of bullying by unkind kids in the future may out sway the positives . It's what's in the kids best interests that is focused on primarily . I'm not saying that's right but it's something that weighs heavily in the decision making process . It depends on the kids attitude towards certain factors and arrangements too . I think the main aim is to make sure that they 'fit in' as seamlessly as possible and are not made to feel uncomfortable in the future .

I think you'll find it's the same the other way round. If a white couple want to adopt a brown baby, they are at the bottom of the list and people of a simiar cultural background are given priority. Rightly or wrongly it's supposedly in the best interests of the child. I wouldn't know, I'm not a social worker.
I suspect this couple don't want a 10 year old and there aren't any babies that require adoption. Gone public without claiming it's a race issue but with a subtle hint that it's what they're really trying to say. So let's all get angy on their behalf as that's what everybody seems to do these days.

If the child can have a life that's better than feeling unwanted in a care home then let them have it.

Don't disagree with you but I suspect most adopters want babies and most kids in care homes are out of nappies and are walking & talking.

I suppose we'll never know what their motives truly are but I do think it's an issue that will probably never be resolved. Personally I am 23 and I would love to have my own flesh and blood son or daughter but I have always wanted to adopt as well because too many children live a life of sadness in care homes. It wouldn't matter to me if they were a baby or older.
