Cameroon vs Chile yesterday, Vargas scored for Chile right on the stroke of HT, goal was then ruled out for offside several minutes later, after the players had celebrated and they'd changed the scoreboard etc. Confusion reigned.. I didn't actually even realise until after half time that the score had gone back to 0-0.
Then second half Vargas scored again close to the end, ref asked for video replay for another offside which the lino didn't flag, players standing around waiting looking pissed off, finally the ref gave the goal.
Both decision were extremely borderline, and took a long time. It was a bit farcical really. If this is implemented further I can see linos being shy to flag any close offside for fear of getting it wrong, and there'll be endless drawn-out referrals to video and long waits for decisions...
Not a great advert for video tech to be honest.

I was hoping that it would be used for things like offsides or goal disputes as it is going to be taking a lot of the emotion out of the game.
I'd much prefer it be used for red cards/penalties only but I suppose that defeats the object.

It's absolute shite.
The ref in this Germany game just did one because the German players protested. It just ruins the flow of a game.

Does the ref need to be on the pitch anymore?

Does the ref need to be on the pitch anymore? You could certainly start to ask that question about liners, at least for offsides.

Correct decisions both times. They do need to smooth the process out and no checking the replay under pressure from players (like today).

Another VAR farce tonight.
It really isn't very good.

I'm glad it's been trialled. It's looking like it's proving to be pretty naff. If they can work something for offsides that would be good but otherwise sack it off.

Another VAR farce tonight. It really isn't very good. But was the correct decision given? We've all seen England on the wrong end of these decisions in the 90's and 2010. Seems like a good idea to me

have not seen it, so i'll put a tin hat on before i say - i still think it's coming. same was said about cricket and rugby league and union initially. it's never going to be 100% but it's got to be an improvement.

Due to the lack of sportsmanship in the modern game, this is necessary

NZ player is pulled back, NZ player then flies in on a Mexican, fracas ensues. First it looked like the VAR wasn't going to be used but after about 20/30 seconds it all kicks in. The ref then runs over to the sideline to look at the video of it himself. Which seemed odd and not seen in this tournament before. So you've got him pissing about, the video refs from Tahiti pissing about whilst no one knows what's going on. 2/3 minutes elapse and a yellow is brandished to a Mexican. The free kick is taken and then the ref stops play again and gives out two more yellows to a Kiwi and a Mexican for the VAR looked at incident. For me, the NZ player should have walked for his tackle. The Mexican should have been booked for the intial pull back. There was then another Mexican who headbutted a NZ player, he probably should have walked (it's soft but he headbutted him). And then another Mexican runs in and kind of palms a NZ player in the face. You've seen reds given for way less. It all took about 4/5 minutes and the wrong decision was made.

So today we had....
in one game a referee giving the wrong player a red card *after* checking the video, and in the other an appeal for a penalty being turned down after review only for a much clearer call two minutes later not to be even referred to the VAR. No discernible reason why one was reviewed and the other not.
Going well innit 🙄

It was clear the Aussie won the ball so no stoppage was needed. And then the stoppage happened 10-20 seconds later after everyone had forgotten about a great tackle. It's an absolute farce.
