ON Beeb 2 at 10.30 well worth a watch, if you've not seen it, and another watch if you have!

Apparently a lot of its horse shite but it's still bloody entertaining. Martin Sheen is superb.

Clough's first league game in charge of Leeds never gets a mention.

It may be 10.30 pm for those of you in England but it's 11.00 p.m for us in Scotland. At 10.30 on BBC2 Scotland we've got a report on the week's proceedings of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland !
I remember going to the first Leeds league game under Brian Clough when they came to the Vic and we thumped them 3- 0 . I've just looked it up on Google and it was the 17 th of August 1974 and our second half goals were from John Mahoney , Jimmy Greenhoff and big John Ritchie - the attendance was 33,534.

Not sure how accurate it is, but it's a great watch.
The Leeds players come across as complete twats, but there's always two sides to every story and it'd be interesting to know what the surviving players' view is on the film (and the book). I dare say some of them have commented, but I've never seen what those comments are.
I think Peter Taylor's part in the Clough phenomenon is now much more understood than it was back in the day. What they achieved together at Derby then Forest was incredible.

It's a great watch but it is very misleading in parts. It's strange how they portray the Brighton situation, he actually managed them for about 7-8 months winning 12 out of 34 games before taking the Leeds job and parting ways with Taylor. The era of Clough and Taylor's dominance is several decades before I was born but it's great to read about it, what they achieved at Derby and Forest was incredible.

So I agree, several is probably the wrong word to use. It's Michael Sheen not Martin Sheen by the way if we are splitting hairs.

Ermm, I was talking about the erm, other version. With Charlie Sheen as Nigel and Emilio Estevez as the one that didn't make it as a footballer.

It encapsulates the earthy unglamorous working mans club essence of 1970’s football clubs perfectly. Like many dramatisations, if you remember that it’s not the entire absolute truth a pleasant time is had. I was however struck by the dragging out of the tiresome cliche at the end that ‘Brian Clough is the best manager England never had’. That gets stated almost as fact yet nobody can know for sure whether he’d have been successful or not. My own view is that he wouldn’t have proved any more or less successful than Ron Greenwood who was appointed instead.

Peace's books are great. Red or Dead his book about Shankly is even better in my opinion. Not for everyone as his writing style is pretty unique but I find it almost hypnotic. Recommend it to anyone....

Recommend it to anyone.... The book for sure is much better than the film. It does however help if you had a little bit of insight of what went on or you could get a little confused. 🙈

Great film. Such a shame we don't make more sport films. There's so many great US films about American Football and Baseball we just don't seem to do many here. Would love films covering
Gazza Bothams Ashes Jocky Wilson Robin Friday (read the book) The Somerset Roebeck, Richards, Garner, Botham issue. Alex Higgins England 66 Joey Barton (very good book would make a good film) The Crazy Gang The 3 degrees at WBA The Bobby Moore incident in Columbia.
Marvellous proved how we can make a great sport film over here.
On that subject when's the Sir Stan film out?

Here you go: Potters rock champions LeedsReally strange that they left it out Davef, I say that not just as a bias Stoke City supoorter but it really was a key element of the story they were trying to tell, first match out under 'old big'ead' and the Champions get a 3-zip drubbing at Stoke City

'The Unforgiven' is a great book about Revie era Leeds, and well worth a read if you are a student of 60s/70s football. I think due to the clubs 'dirty' tag and hints of corruption, Revie's influence is largely unheralded.

Bothams Ashes and 66 have been done to death with dcumentaries. Bbc did a great programme for their black history season for the 3 degrees. OOOHHH Georgie Berry was interviewd and spoke very well. It was centered around a testomnial match (Cantello ?) That bloke Crooks who was born in Stoke until he moved to london played. Also there was a play on bbc about the hurricane about 12 months ago. But agreed thr Americans do do it well. They did a good one on Wayne Gretzky that entered around the 'great ones' transfer from the Oilers to the Kings which stunned the Ice Hockey world at the time and ignited my interest in Ice Hockey. Up to that point i didnt reslise i had a team 5 miles away !

On the subject of football books, has anyone read 'A season with Verona' Tim Parkes. One of my favourite books, probably helped by the fact that I grew up just before the birth of sky sports, when Italian football (showcased by Ch 4) was absolutely huge. A fascinating read and real eye opener into Italian football and politics. Highly recommend. Hellas Verona have just won promotion to serie A once again this season btw, scraping through on goal difference.
