He's a good player and a nice bloke. The reason we shouldn't be playing him is nothing to do with his age. We're a far slower outfit with him starting. When he leads the line, opposition defences can just push as high as they like because theres nothing in behind, so we get less space on the ball and end up lumping it to him for no reason.
He can play really well and often it's still detrimental to the team because of how we play. We don't even play to his skills, we lump it from the centre backs up to him when he's on his own, and we don't put nearly as many crosses in as we should.
Love the bloke, great option to have, but not to start.

You are correct Dave, still the gist of my comments are probably right in the sense we don't want a defender only one goal short of the top Stoke striker, over a season. Another way to look at it, Harry Kane has scored as many goals in his last TWO games than any of our forwards has managed all season!!!!!!! You're right, I left the top seven club's strikers out so as to make it a more realistic comparison, but if you look at Everton and Lukaku, you can see the main reason they are 17 points ahead of Stoke.

Crouchie has been a top, top player for us and he should remain a squad player. He's more than paid for his transfer fee and that goal he scored on Sunday was worth 3 points and two million quid. Just love the guy and the way he approaches the game. Never moans; just gets on with it, and he's a bundle of fun.
OS.

I'm a bit sick of this Mame Diouf saga. Upgrade on Jerome. Lovely bloke apparently, and he does give his all, but he certainly isn't the answer to our problems. Apart from a difficult miss against the arse, he managed to catch one quite sweetly yesterday, but on any other day, it could and would have flown anywhere. Sums him up for me, but I do like the lad really. Mame's finishing is far from great BUT, and this is a big but, if you are going to play with a lone striker, then you absolutely must play to their strengths otherwise you're fucked and you're not going to score many goals. And that, in a nutshell is why we are currently fucked and do not score many goals! The only striker we have whose assets we seem able to fully utilise are Crouch's. Thats the managers fault. When Diouf and Berahino are on the pitch it feels to me like we are going out of our way to avoid giving them the sort of service they want. Both players are making runs that cry out for a pass between full back and centre half, but we dn't get the ball through the pitch quickly enoug to play that pass with room in behind, and on the odd occasion we do we seem intent on playing it out to the wings. I said when we signed Berahino that it was pointless signing a Diouf upgrade when we'd never figured out how to play to Diouf. Feel like just before Bony was dumped we had actually started to play to him properly, we were just feeding it in to him with his back to goal and he was holding it up, laying it off and getting into the box. There wasn't enough end product but for a spell of 3 or 4 games we actually started to keep the ball in the opposition half, something we haven't done consistently in way too long. Still think that type of player is what we need in this formation. Someone who can hold it and then get in the box to bring the attacking midfielder into the game.

It's not just about one player. We are one of the lowest scoring sides (again) in this league, so our problems go much deeper. At the risk of "banging on" I'll say it again, the team needs "balance". I can see Crouchy being part of a very successful side, if he has a pacey guy who can run beyond him, and wingers who can 'mix it up' and not just succumb to 'hitting it long'...that is down to planning, training and practice and it being seen as a part of the overall 'plan', just as playing with wing backs might be an option The thing is, none of these formations ever look like they are part of a plan, more just desperate measures (or change for the sake of change), and the squad doesn't seem to have the correct personnel for any tactical option the manager might choose. So: 1. Get together a squad that can play the way the manager wants them to (Plan A) 2. Train and practice these tactics (Plan A) 3. Have a "plan B" 4. Get players in the squad who can operate said Plan B 5. Train and practice 'Plan B' I would try and "patent" this idea but several leading coaches already seem to apply it and Mr Conte seems to be the best at it this season...

So many and we all know who they are including experienced posters rain crap on this guy. Season after season game after game he makes mugs of them. In what way? Not knocking he can still goals - but his work rate off the ball - or ball control? And is the future a 36 year old? Great player in his time and can still do a job for us as a sub in last 15 mins or so. Try and do a balanced post rather than scoring points in future?

Unlikely but just about doable I guess. Lukaku has time on his side but is only on 18 and averages 3 headers a season. If he plays ten more years in the Prem, maaaaybe.... The other factor is whether either of those players will remain in the Prem long enough. My money's on Crouchy still having the crown come 2030

Calm yourself, Chelsea only scored 8 goals from a header last season (in comparison with WBA's 16 and Palace's 13)

Crouchy's heading ability mainly comes down to his height. Still a fantastic record, but there have been way better headers of the ball in the Premier League past and present.

He will score more headers, doesn't mean he can actually head the ball better than other players. People are seriously thick on this forum.

Do you actually like football? Because you certainly don't understand it. You're just biased towards Crouch because he plays for Stoke. Drogba, Kenwyne Jones, Benteke, Alan Shearer, Harry Kane. All BETTER at heading the ball. Now tell me how you understand football and I don't because I can guarantee I've played at a higher level of football than you.

Javier Hernandez as well was short but had a fantastic leap and header on him. I'm not bashing Crouch in this thread, his record is tremendous, but his height and our playstyle played right into it for him. There have been some fantastic headers of the ball in the Premier League.

Just because he's scored the most headers doesn't make him a better header than the other guys mentioned. He played in a side that was based around it, also he's 6ft7 which is begging for us to cross it for him.

And for all the biased people. Ask Peter yourselves. He has stated there are far better players at heading a ball than him. But I guess they all don't understand football.
