Or will it be revisited next season with new signings? Is 4-2-3-1 set in stone? Should it be?

You need to consult Hughes' lucky 8 ball.

I'd say it's his favoured formation.

343 for me.
Used to think it would be a cracking back up. Having seen a bit of Conte executing it I think it's ok for the default with other options in reserve. But it's probably a season too late nah.
Payed our best, most attacking and aggressive football this season deploying it.

In the words of Mike Bassett, 4,4, fucking 2

He's always been a 4-2-3-1 man hasn't he, I can't see 3-5-2 happening too much unless he fucks it again.

And this is one of the main reasons why our season has been so poor. I don't think anyone truly knows going against Bournemouth what system we will play. Most likely 4 5 1 but you can't say for sure. How many times have we changed formation this season the following week?

We just haven't got the squad for 3 at the back. It doesn't suit our captain. Any senior full back that the manager trusts. Our two most creative players. Our third most creative player who has been fooked off to Germany Anyone in particular bar Muni.

I still think that for Saido to be a success he needs support with him , maybe a player in the welbeck mould who can run beyond the defence and also work wide and back .
Also two athltetic full back would make a big difference as would a midfield driver in the mould of Delph

In the words of Mike Bassett, 4,4, fucking 2 442 is awful for us. I think our main problem this season is that 3,4,3 - 4,2,3,1 - 4,4,2 are all ineffective for us, hence the discussion. I, like Mark Hughes am struggling to come up with a difinative answer.

For me 3-4-3 works against the lower clubs that sit back and defend. I do remember 4-2-3-1 being way to slow and not-dynamic last season so Hughes has found a way to solve that and make the game more open.
But 3-4-3 doesnt work against the big-boys.
For me his tactical formations are becoming flexible enough and its what I want to see from a manager.
Problem is he then bought Berahino who cant play as a long striker apparently and he had to try 4-4-2 which is just wank for us.
As Bayern says though we dont have the best personell for 3 at the back but I can see us using it again next season. Pieters is never a wingback in a million years.

This is the problem with football it's not played on a computer screen I know that may come as a surprise to our younger supporter.Football is a simple game if you pass the ball to a fellow team member and move then the what ever formation you use should work,if you are slow stand like still like zombies ,pass back and have no pride then any formation will fail.

It doesn't help us, and never will, until we rid ourselves of these old men, and replace with younger, quicker, more adept players. It is up to the management at all levels to address this! This summer preferably!

Finding a way of playing that gets all of our best players onto the field is a major problem for Hughes.
This season he has contantly changed and it just hasn't worked. Next year he needs to stick with his prefered option even if there are a few poor results. The thumpings at the start of the season caused him to completely abandon the way he seemed to want to play and cast us adrift on sea of formation and personel changes that guaranteed inconsistency. We have good players. The coaching staff must work out how to use them.
Personally I think we need to try to get Butland, Ryan, Bruno, Allen, Ramadan, Shaq and Arnie (and Hughes will stick with Berahino) onto the field at the same time. That leaves Whelan, Adam, Crouch, Diouf, Cameron, Afellay, Walters, Bojan, Muniesa and the full backs fighting for the remaining 3 places.
Pretty sure Imbulla is a goner.

My point beening all this formation crap is bollocks,it's about scoring more than the oppersition what ever formation you play,by your comments you are younger than me,but when we had a decent team Waddo used to let the players control the game not a blackboard with numbers on,but it's the modern thing so it's got to be right, what's wrong with pass and move if you keep the ball you win.

I know that's your point but if it was bollocks it wouldn't be a thing. It is. Some teams are better in one, some managers get the best out of one and not the other. What Waddo did is irrelevant.

Experts, eh?

This is the problem with football it's not played on a computer screen I know that may come as a surprise to our younger supporter.Football is a simple game if you pass the ball to a fellow team member and move then the what ever formation you use should work,if you are slow stand like still like zombies ,pass back and have no pride then any formation will fail. Chelsea are literally going to win the league because they changed formation after Liverpool and Arsenal beat them in back-to-back games in September. They've only lost three league games since. It's pretty daft to suggest formations don't matter, there are swathes of examples across the history of football where the formation clearly had a massive impact on things. England won the World Cup by using a 'wingless' system. Herbert Chapman is one of the most important managers in the history of the game because he invented the WM. This football club stayed in the Premier League with (what was considered at the time) one of the weakest squads ever because they were managed very well in a certain way. We beat Manchester City and United in December 2015 because of a change in formation that played Bojan as a 'false' striker while Marko Arnautovic was the real goal "target man" (as it were) but from a wide position. Of course the formation matters! And they've mattered since before video games existed. If the formation didn't matter, every team in the world would still be playing a 2-3-5. The formation just has to suit the players that you have at the club and the sort of football you want to play. But the simple fact is that recently the manager has got himself muddled up and no longer knows his best system, formation, or even his best XI. That's not because all formations are pointless, just that the manager has got himself into a mess of his own making.
