Sorry if posted I hadn't seen this being discussed, and I am glad Sparky has finally said something I thought this was great from Hughes: "Lee Grant coming in was one of the better decisions we made," Hughes acknowledged, "because at the point he came into the team we were struggling for wins, shipping too many goals. "It seemed like every time there was a shot on goal it was going in. Lee came in, steadied the ship and did great for us, but he understood the situation when he came in that it was an opportunity for him. "Lee will be pushing Jack and if he's the more dominant keeper in pre-season he'll expect to be picked." www.stokesentinel.co.uk/we-owe-lee-grant-big-time-admits-stoke-city-boss/story-30300230-detail/story.html

"one of the better decisions we made"
I'd say it was the best decision of the season. Grant just might be the best new signing of any Premier League team in terms of points saved/gained.

I don't think it's overstating it to say it was the decision that saved our season, imho.

The best £1.3m Stoke have ever spent. He's been my player of the season along with Bruno...
A few on here keep slagging him off, disgraceful !....... But I won't name and shame them......😀

Maybe even he thinks his performance has been pretty wank after all.

Be careful not to say anything too positive. In the interests of balance, that Joe Allen has been shit, what a waste of money he was!

Grant has done nothing wrong and shouldn't have been dropped.

The love for Grant absolutely astounds me.
Yes be grateful for him doing his job as the two before him couldn't.
But by Christ this lamenting of him losing his place to a much better goalkeeper who when fit should have always walked back in the side is beyond pathetic.

Jack is potentially a world class keeper and it is right that he resumes as our number 1. Grant has been a fantastic signing, but he knew the score and has done well to get a contract here, which was a bonus for him. He still has a role to play and jack now has some much needed pressure behind him.

Without Grant and Indi it could have been a very different season. Roll on August [/qouote] Hughes got verrrrry lucky with Grant. Took a massive gamble on a keeper that couldn't get on a Championship club's bench...one gamble that paid off.

How exactly did he get lucky?
He'd been interested in grant previously, whilst at man city, so clearly remembered his interest in the player.
Guess you will be willing to say he's been unlucky with the signings of imbula and bony

So he just knew that Derby's 3rd-choice 'keeper would be ready-made for a first-choice berth at a Top-10 Prem club? If you were a betting man, the odds would have been on it being nowhere near the success it has been. Bony? I was happy he came, and only MH knows what the fuck has gone wrong. Imbula - the only thing I'd say is that if he'd been scouted properly, it might have turned up his flaws which had been common knowledge, from his time at previous clubs.

Players should be in the team on merit - not reputation. Butland at his best is better than Grant at his best but at the moment Grant (who has been one of our best players all season) should be playing and Butland should be fighting to re-establish himself as first choice. Butland was very rusty last week and it seemed to make the defence nervous. I'd rather see Grant see out the season and let the pecking order get sorted out over the summer.

Apparantly Grant has a slight hip injury as well. One things for a sure, we need another goalie. I meant it might not have been the total hatchet job it seemed from the outside. Simply a convenient time to rest him and give Jack game time. Still lets use it as another stick to beat the manager with without knowing the facts. I agree we do need another 2nd or 3rd string keeper.

I'd have dropped Grant like a stone once Butland was back. I agree with Hughes on this. I'm having a go at the fans.

I was just pointing out that Grant told someone I know that he'd got a slight injury which doesn't seem to have been publicised. So that might mean there were other factors at play other than simply a brutal benching as most on here are accusing the manager of. That said I agree that Jack is our number 1 and that Grant knew the score when he came and however brutal it is we need to get Jack back playing competitively and the only way to do that these days is in the first team.

Grant has been excellent but Jack will be looking to be in the next England squad, so will want game time. As long as Grant was told what was happening, in the right way, then I have no problem with the decision. He (Grant) knew when he signed that JB is our No1 (when fit) so can't really be too surprised. Hopefully he (Grant) will look back and think: "One minute I was 3rd choice at the sheep shaggers and next moment I am playing in the Prem at Old Trafford...not a bad move eh!?"

In all honesty, it's a pretty simple and easy to come to conclusion regarding Butland, whether you are in love with Grant or not we HAVE TO play him for these next few games just to see if he can actually cope with proper competitive football if we don't field test him we'll never know how his injury recovery is looking

I was surprised at first and though Grant was unlucky to be dropped at Swansea. Jack seemed back to his best in Saturday and it was great to see him in between the posts. We need them both able to step in and should be good competition with each other.
