I am as many are squarely in the I don't know what to think when it comes to Hughes. He and the staff surely know more about this level of football than all of the members of this message board combined. So for that reason I want to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can get it all sorted. At the same time based on all of the chopping and changing of formations an lineups we have seen the past 18 months I begin to wonder if the previous sentence is accurate at all! He has clearly brought in some talent (Arnie, Shaq, Sobhi) but pieces are also clearly missing. Right now I feel we have two options, either spend to get the 2-3 player we really need or find a new manager who can use what we currently have more effectively. Neither are as simple as that. We spend to find a couple in defense and a true creative midfielder. But who, how much and can we get them here? No one knows. We sack Hughes and bring in a new manager. Again who and will they really be any better? No one knows. Something will have to give, not sure which I want. I am leaning towards both as an option but that may be my frustration talking.

For a change some sensible comments and debate here, on both sides. I happen to be in the Remain camp, just like with Brexit, and just like with Brexit, we need to be careful what we wish for. Give Hughes the Summer and then prove it with a good start to the season next year rather than the slow and tired starts we have seen for a few years.

Whilst I agree that a large proportion of the blame lies with the players however, Mark Hughes is responsible for the absolute clusterfucks of substitutions, the constant tinkering of formation week in week out and most importantly the dreadful pre seasons where our players are clearly not ready for premier league football from day 1.
All in all its been an up and down 4 year period with all the ups coming in the first 2 and a bit years and now it is either time for Mark to radically change his approach to pre season and in game management or he is replaced with a better calibre of manager.
**Also a special shout out to our transfer team which needs urgent review too**

A great return to form for Ted - always lovely to read you, and never less than thought-provoking. We agree on most of the big stuff but I'd add, yet again, that we've had such grievous problems closing down opponents in open play and defending set pieces I don't see how Sparky can take us forward on any basis without a major rethink in that area. Major meaning imo a new defensive coach - I wasn't Dave Kemp's greatest fan but I'd be so glad to see a similar figure right now. Without the defensive issues sorted it's ever likely we're not going to have the necessary confidence further up the pitch, at best we'll remain streaky and too reliant on the form and fitness of a few strong characters on the pitch.
