I went over to York today to watch the game against Wrexham, for whom Shenton was playing left side midfield. He showed some nice touches in the 80 mins he was on but didn't really stand out and sometimes looked a little lightweight against a big York side. I gather he was recently used at left back for a few games. Bearing in mind that this is 4 levels below the PL, I wouldn't say on this evidence that he's likely to come back as a potential 1st team player, but it would be nice to be proved wrong.
Speaking to some of the Wrexham people I hadn't realised just how many current connections there are between the clubs. Apart from Sparky being a Wrexham lad, Mark Cartwright, Eddie N., Mel Pejic and Rooster are all former Wrexham players.

Ruined by not letting him out on loan last season. Hopefully we've learned our lesson.
He's too slow for the Premier League but I think he'll be a good league footballer.

Shenton made his Premier League debut against Man City coming on for the last 10 minutes in Feb 2015 didn't he?
He must have found the subsequent 2 and a bit years rather underwhelming, but I suppose no one said it would be easy.

Scored after 80 seconds but it was a bit downhill after that. He's been a big part of York's revival which has given them a chance of avoiding the drop which looked out of the question a couple of months ago, but today he struggled to provide much of a threat or an outlet - but I suppose a goal is a goal, which is what you want from a striker. We had a few more of the enormous throws from Carl Muggleton's son but the Beast couldn't get on the end of them this time.

He must have found the subsequent 2 and a bit years rather underwhelming, but I suppose no one said it would be easy. It wasn't 10 mins Godfrey, it was about 30 secs. if you recall. He was standing on the touchline for an age waiting for the ball to go out. When he finally did come on, the ref blew up at the exact instant he was receiving the ball for the first time. It was a moot point whether he actually touched the ball on his debut

Being a youth footballer must honestly be a terrifying experience. I can't imagine what it's like to commit your whole life to a profession and then to be told you're not good enough must be harrowing.
I hope Ollie does well wherever he ends up in football, hopefully that's here. But if not with us, as high up as possible.

That's part of why I think this management team are a great fit for our Club. Sentimentality aside I've seen nowt from Shenton to suggest he can add owt to our squad. Unfortunately.

The player is not good enough, he wasnt ruined, another dig at Hughes with your bs about young players not getting a chance. Have you had a son or relative that didnt make it at Stoke, you seem to continue to have an agenda about kiddies.

Ben Marshall looked a better prospect and he's been around a few different Championship clubs already. I think Ollie will be very lucky if he finds himself in the championship but I would suggest a league 1 team will be where he ends up. Maybe he'll progress up the leagues as his career unfolds but I doubt he'll ever play for Stoke in the premier league, unfortunately.

I've not seen enough of Shenton to know if he is good enough , I suspect he may be a bit too small but there is an issue with young players getting a chance , Rashford got in at Man U only when they were desperate Ali shone at Franchise FC and Kane went out on Loan to toughen up but there must be lots who dont get the chance at the right times and then it passes them by .
I would like to see the u-23 league scrapped and a lot more out on loan once they get to 19 so they get chances to shine .
Sending shenton to Wrexham will do him good wherever he ends up I hope

He was kept at the club despite a loan offer being on the table and has then stagnated. We cannot afford to do the same with our other youth players. And no. We're just bad at it but getting better.

Ollie had a lot of personal heart break running up to this point and "IF" the stories are to be believed the inclusion in the team was an arm around the shoulder from the club to show their support, I hope to be proved wrong on this but I have not seen anything as yet to suggest that he will be making it a more permanent transition, that Transition in skill level and application from reserve to First team should be evident by the time a player is 18-21 years of age especially playing in such a lower league (Deli Ali). Fingers crossed for the lad, I would love a local lad to make it big for the club

In that case its somewhat a massive misjudgement by someone, presumably the manager, in giving him a new four year contract barely a year ago? The way people talk of a local lad on here who's gone through what he's gone through is pretty frigging dire btw.

I would imagine it's a tough call at 17 to be 100% sure how a player will progress, the 4 year deal will be small fry in the grand scheme of things and I do think the club are keen to see a local lad come through the ranks. But when people (in this case bayern) are quick to blame the management team for pretty much everything, it needs pointing out that when push comes to shove he might not have what it takes. Hope this doesn't turn out to be true....

Like I said we need to learn from this. And I hope we haven't missed out with sending Ngoy out this season.

How can a young player stagnate over a 6-12 month period, face facts he wasn't good enough then and isn't now, that's life that's football, many a young and older player have shown massive potential only to nose dive for many different reasons, you can't just blame Hughes for everything that goes wrong at the club. What next "Hughes to blame for faulty washing machine in kit room" shocker!

What next "Hughes to blame for faulty washing machine in kit room" shocker! By not playing football. If a loan was on offer for him why did we reject it? Surely any football would be better for his development than hanging around getting no actual game experience? I agree with the statement that he wasn't good enough then and isn't now, however if he had been allowed to go on loan when the offer was first there he may have developed more to the point that he would look out of place in Wrexhams team. He might even have gotten to the point where he was pushing for a place on the bench here. We'll never know.... One thing is for certain though. Keeping him from potential first team football so he can hang around and get 0 minutes here has done the poor lad no good at a time when he needs games.

So a young player can lose all his potential in what 6-12 months of training with premiership players? I dont think so!
