It's kind of like an unofficial after-show party. It doesn't have to be laid on by God. A bit like the video for Club Tropicana.

Because even atheists don't like the idea that we're here for nothing more than spreading our genes. It's no surprise that organised religion still exists, it's human nature for us to think that we are special and have to be here for a reason. We live, we shag, we watch Stoke, we die. Get over it.

Because on an atomic level our bodies do reincarnate so why not our thoughts our character? Our consciousness if you like.

At least 17% of people are fucking backwards www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-39153121For anyone who actually believes this utter donkey shite what makes you think that the time after your death will be any different to the time before you were born? What were those 14bn years like?

They don't like believing in a void after death.
Personally I'm not fussed, if you're here for ~80 years make the most of it, and don't live it in the hope of meeting a sky god after death who'll give you sweets for being a good boy for all eternity.

I bet they wouldn't walk off building because gravity is "just a theory".

Because on an atomic level our bodies do reincarnate so why not our thoughts our character? Our consciousness if you like. There is a very low probability that the atoms of a dead person will eventually become part of a living plant or animal ( is this what is meant by reincarnation ? As an atheist I don't know or even care ) However , the physical properties of sub atomic particles can be experimentally determined and the results replicated in suitable laboratories throughout the world. For simple examples think of splitting the atom , the discovery of the neutron and the ratio of the charge to mass of an electron. Can thoughts , character and consciousness be measured and the results replicated ? If you can measure them then what units do they have ? In the scientific world terms such as energy , power , temperature , wavelength etc are all strictly defined and have units in which they can be measured.

Why not? By it's very definition 'atheism' is the absence of a belief in deities not an afterlife.

If there was an afterlife, that wouldn't prove the existence of God.In the same way that Ghosts don't prove the existence of an afterlife. They're two different things.

I'm sure you don't care as an atheist but do you not care as a scientist? If they buried me and planted an acorn above me couldn't part of me eventually become part of the tree? I'm sure thoughts, character and consciousness could be measured to a certain point in theory but impossible in practice and you couldn't replicate it around the world. If you got the ball rolling it could be the DunnetHeadMoonraker scale until further breakthrough's EDIT: I know it's only Guardian readers Q&A's but ..... Where have all the atoms that constitute "me" been since the creation of the Earth? Have they been part of other people through the ages?

People that believe in an invisible man in the sky don't have a monopoly on all of spirituality. I was alluding to Camila Paglias thesis on Sky gods in Sex & Violence, Nature & Art, where she sets out how notion of sky gods revolutionised thinking from the old pagan earth gods, but what is it you mean by spirituality...

In the west, even committed atheists have been brought up in a broadly Christian society so have been immersed in religious messages all their life. So, it's not hard to see why some trace of it lingers on in the belief of an after-life. In the old eastern europe, the opposite was true. When I went there decades ago, the people I spoke to about this quite happily said they had no such illusions (delusions).
Add into that the almost impossible thought experiment to conceive of yourself not existing in any way and you can see the attractiveness of it.

I'm an atheist and to an extent believe there *may* be an afterlife. The main reason of doubt in my mind though is the existence of Heaven/Hell and what you have to do to get in either.
