1-0 up against Man Utd... Parks the bus.. Draw 1-0 up against Chelsea... Parks the bus.. Loss 1-0 up against Liverpool... Parks the bus.. Loss
He brought Whelen on to grind out a 1-0 & we immediately lost any impact going forward (our best form of defence) We're then chasing the game with 2 defensive CM's.
Whilst he sets up to stifle teams with this approach instead of attacking, most of our fans will never warm to him.

The sky summariser "strange one by Mark Hughes" before any goals

One of the worst decisions I've seen in a long time, completely changed the game

There were no other midfield options, and we needed something there, even if it was just a body. We didn't. If you need just a body to county movement put Muni in there. Possibility, I'd prefer him to whelan really. but I disagree with regard to need. They were tearing through the middle far too easily, Can especially.

They were tearing through the middle far too easily, Can especially. They were on top in there but we weren't getting battered. I just didn't feel the need for a major tactical change. We'd gone from creating chances to nothing as soon as Whelan came on. It was an idiotic move.

Anyone know where Affellay was today? On the Naughty Step with Ramadan and Bardsley.

Anyone know where Affellay was today? On the Naughty Step with Ramadan and Bardsley. Is that because he got given (mentally) a new 2 year contract?

To which they cry but Muni isn't a CM yet seem perfectly happy that MBD who isn't a wing back gets used as one on a fairly regular basis. I'm fairly sure Muni has a more suitable skill set to play CM than MBD does play RWB.

Not only did we make an unnecessary change bringing Whelan on we also had to try and adapt to a different formation from a 4-4-2 to some kind of loose piss poor 4-4-1-1 with Adam lumbering about in some kind of no mans land. It was a complete clusterfuck from Hughes, as others have mentioned, if Walters was struggling with a knock the obvious replacement was Diouf and stay with a 4-4-2. I get thoroughly pissed off with all these 3-5-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-1-4-1 formations. We were comfortable in a 4-4-2 until we made that abortion of a substitution and the abortion of a formation that substitution created.

The worst thing I can say about the sub is that Andy Townsend advocated it about a minute before it occurred.

We weren't comfortable but that was due to his first sub being a slow immobile ageing CM. We may have lost whatever he did but what he did just handed the game over on a plate. His appetite for slow immobile ageing players is insatiable.

Liverpool were having a lot of possession but Grant wasn't being troubled and they weren't getting behind us, that all changed after the substitution and change in formation.

Indeed.
The problem wasn't that we had only two players in there but that one of the players was the totally immobile Adam.
Problem was, that there wasn't anybody else on the bench who was mobile, in fact there isn't actually anybody else at the club who is mobile and could do a job in a '2'.
After the money that has been spent, it really is a sad indictment of how utterly bereft of quality there is in our midfield options.
