Judge Mansell drew criticism from domestic abuse campaigners and several MPs when he told the court last month that the victim was not vulnerable as she was "an intelligent woman with a network of friends" and had a degree.

I've heard of that sort of thing for minor crimes. If an offender has just got a job then jailing them for something minor might well lose them that job, they go to jail, meet more criminals, come out, go back to crime. Maybe long term better to dish out community service. But GBH, which this definitely is, should absolutely go to jail for a long long time |

Its bad but perhaps the judge was taking into account that the defendant is from a culture/religion that advocates wife beating. |
