Games tonight: Messi has been suspended for four games for something he said to one of the officials during the Chile game the other day. Argentina's record with him is 15 points from six games, without him it's 7 from 7... they could be in a bit of bother if they're not careful edit - the times above are all four hours behind UK time by the way

But a World Cup without Argentina? A World Cup without Lionel ? That would be unthinkable.

What did he actually say? Not been publicised, just that he used "injurious words" towards a liner

And just bizarre with how it was reported. He's a stupid bastard for saying that to a ref mind. Let's hope this is the start of a new era for this sort of punishment for abusing refs.

It was quite extreme, he swore right into the liner's face at the time of the original decision, then approached him angrily at the end and faced up to him again, abusing him right into his face, then pointedly refused to shake his hand after shaking the hands of the other two. It does seem pretty harsh though. The video went viral which maybe brought it more to FIFA's attention.

They've denied that, I think that's just a rumour, unless you've seen something credible? Arge losing 2-0 now!

Argentina will still qualify despite these kittens. In 2001 Brazil looked in danger of not making it but look how that ended up.

All this is dropping Argentina right in the shit.
Brazil beating Paraguay later will pretty much extinguish their chances so that's one less threat I suppose.

Chile Venezuela ended 3-1, but it could have been about 8-4. Chile missed three golden chances in the space of four minutes, and also missed a penalty (which would have made Alexis Sanchez their record goal scorer), while Venezuela had two good penno shouts waved away and also had a goal not given which seemed to have crossed the line on the replays. I love South American nogger

Congratulations Brazil. First to qualify for next. They look rather marvellous too. Their ongoing challenge..... to combine the style and beauty of their instincts with a ruthless winning mentality. They have tried to win it the 'European way' in the past and failed miserably. They seem closer to achieving the balance now.
When are people reluctant to acknowledge Neymar's brilliance? IMHO he is the best in the world right now

CONMEBOL has by far the most interesting World Cup qualifying games I've seen.
UEFA qualifying from what I've seen can be pretty boring, and I blame the setup. There are too many games that are lopsided like France Andorra or whatever. There are also too many games between countries with no chance of advancing. I think it would be more interesting if there was a preliminary round for the lower ranked teams. It could be like the FA Cup where the lower tiers play in the early rounds, and the higher tiers enter later.
I haven't seen the Asia, Oceania, and Africa games and can't comment on how they compare.
