So we clearly need a midfielder of quality who can distribute accurately and quickly to get someone in behind Saido
But who? Key transfer of the summer after Bruno.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is exactly what we need. Never understood why Arsenal or Man.Utd haven't been in for him. Consistently good season after season.

Those Egyptian guys that are on the summer transfer thread look decent, direct and love to hold / run with the ball. I'd try for those, wouldn't break the bank and would also help to settle Ramadan in.

I still think a holding/defensive midfielder (with good distribution) to replace Whelan/Cameron should be our priority. Sigurdsson is a specialist attacking midfielder and Delph is primarily a central midfielder whose secondary position is as a defensive midfielder.
Sigurddson would be excellent in the centre (no 10) position behind the striker. But we would still need a Whelan/Cameron replacement to partner Allen in a midfield 2 behind the no 10.

I don't think we need a No10 either a combination of Shaq, Arnie and Ramadan can supply Berahino with the balls he needs. Cameron"s energy and athleticism has been a revelation compared to Whelan or Adam but he's still pretty bloody awful with the ball. We need a player who brings that athleticism and physical presence but better at finding the players that can hurt our opponents. Doesn't need to be flash or penetrative just safe progressive distribution.

Swear people forget he was at spurs for 2 years I haven't forgotten, Cast, but I heard recently there were extenuating circumstances for him not breaking through at Tottenham. I doubt we could get him anyway, but a player of his type is what we really need.

I can't understand why we could not play Affa and Bojan for creativity. Both of them would work very well together and create the most in our entire midfield. One is on loan, one can't start a game.

Afellay and Ireland would both be creative players in midfield given license and fitness to be so. Equally, a trio of Arnie, Shaq and Sobhi behind any centre forwards, you would think, couldn't fail to create chances for a front man capable of making intelligent runs.

Shaq needs to play at no10 (when bloody fit). We then need someone as athletic/strong as cameron......but who can pass. Ramadan/Shaq/Arnie with Berahino (yet to be convinced...may need preseason to get 100% up to speed), then Allen with upgrade midfielder, then new rb and lb and cb then we're good to go.

He was imo another gamble with a big fee and contract attached. I'm thinking you could try 4 or 5 Fofana's for 1 Lamina and knowing next to nothing about either player I'd much prefer to spread the risk. Suppose the Imbula deal has put me off big money punts from abroad. If I was going to spend a bigish fee I'd prefer the type of deal Everton did for Lookman a player you have watched a lot in the right sort of intensity of football and really done your homework on.

On the evidence I've seen since his return from injury I wouldn't want to see Affelay in that role. He's not releasing the ball quickly even when he has good options. He's made himself look very tidy in keeping possession but quite a few moments stand out in my mind where he's failed to play players in who have taken up dangerous positions. From the point of view of team play and end product I think he's flattering to deceive.

If we're playing a midfield 2, Allen and Cameron are pretty much the only option on the books at the moment. --------Cameron/Whelan upgrade ????????-----------Allen ---------------- ????????????------------------Berahino But, looking to next season, what player types are we looking for to: a.) play slightly behind Allen? A better Whelan with some positional discipline who can play the holding role in a 4-2-3-1? Or a Cameron-y upgrade with some athleticism and mobility who can play in a 2? b.) play in front of Allen as the bridge to Berahino and play to his strengths? Can that player be Shaqiri as a floaty, No.10 type? Can it be Sobhi? Or will it be more of a hard-working, physical Walters-y type forward in and around Berahino? downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/100825/aaron-mooy?page=53An interesting player who could be available is Mooy at Huddersfield (on loan from Man City and he isn't going to make it there) But Hughes has got to decide what he's after before we really know what we're looking for.

Need a deep midfielder in the Cameron mould who, first and foremost, has some pace and discipline, but can pass. With Allen next to him, and 4 from Shaq/Arnie/Ramadan/Bojan/Berahino/Afellay/Diouf/Walters/N'Goy, it looks good.
Allen and the new defensive midfielder to do the dirty work, and leave the front four to create the goals.
It is the single biggest issue we have in the team, trying to find a pacey midfielder who will sit.

Younes is a one trick pony fella.... he will beat his man , turn back then do it all again. His delivery is good but that's when he's more direct. More often than not he does all the hard work then goes and undo's it all with unnecessary showboating. Nouri picks a pass out of nothing- seriously! He's played quite a few Europa League games and been the stand out player every time, The coach Peter Bos hardly plays him and the die hard Ajax fans are starting to get seriously pissed off. Same goes with Donny van de Beek- cracking player who gets very little game time. I'll look back on this thread when he goes for mega bucks and think " another slips through our fingers"

Agree that we do need more creativity in central midfield.
But first things first, Hughes needs to decide his formation for next season and buy players to fit it.
If he's sticking with the 4-4-2, he'll need a different type of midfielder than if he goes back to his favoured 4-2-3-1.
