erm its a no brainer for me give him a new contract great backup to a new player good pro and loyal to the club add a coaching element to his role with either the youth team etc and help him get fa coaching badges start getting the older players that have created the good team atmosphere into our coaching team build for the future and give the young players a bedding in time, knowing we can fall back on the older pro's as back up

Look, when I work with an Arsenal season ticket holder that reckons Adam is one of the most intelligent players in the Premier League, he's worth holding onto.

Where exactly is the room for a new player in central midfield?

I know this will upset a few people, but surely next season we must move on from Charlie and Glenn! Sorry lads!

No thanks. Great servant for the club but we have to move on. Already got Afellay, Cameron, Allen, Whelan, a new midfielder I'm assuming as well.

One of the most likeable players in the squad.
But he and Johnson would be the two I'd let go.
Interesting to see what happens with both of them. Hughes always speaks warmly of Charlie, and we seem to have turned down cash from West Ham for Johnson in January - so it wouldn't be a huge shock if we took the option to extend the pair of them by 12 months.
But if we do that, and see them as members of the 18 next year, it's harder to see the much-needed injection of new blood fitting in

A coaching role of some sort then yeah
This boards been chirping on for ages about lowering the total squad age, and as good as he's been we need some young 'uns in

To bring in new blood, we have to say goodbye to some of the older pros as well as the younger ones who are not up to the mark. Much as I respect them both as players, Johnson and Adam are the first of the over 30s I would look to be releasing.

we should hang on to Charlie
Great pro, magic at times.
It's alright to say replace him with new /young talent but, look what happened with imbula
Keep Charlie until we have better

I guess the challenge is that Charlie is easy to get off the books, you just don't renew his contract, but Imbula can't head out of the exit door without much eating of humble pie by the transfer team and the tipping in to a skip of wheel barrow loads of bank notes by our owners. It's a tricky one alright.

Don't know what to think about this really. I absolutely love Charlie but I also accept that we need to be focusing on younger players now and have ample cover in midfield. However, he is Charlie and he can still be a game changer from the bench for certain matches surely? If he goes I will really miss him.... old school footballer with passion, drive and desire in spades. A very sad day when the time comes to say goodbye to Mr Maverick, but I sense that time is approaching and our loss will be someone else's gain

Him and crouchie provide us with a plan B, so if we don't keep them we will need a new plan B imo.
Some teams , Liverpool for example, do not have a plan B and they are poorer for it.

I'd go with this theory, great back up, never complains about being left out, well liked around the club and the media and would like to see the club support him in a coaching role. erm its a no brainer for me give him a new contract great backup to a new player good pro and loyal to the club add a coaching element to his role with either the youth team etc and help him get fa coaching badges start getting the older players that have created the good team atmosphere into our coaching team build for the future and give the young players a bedding in time, knowing we can fall back on the older pro's as back up

Well worth another contract, great player to have on the bench, plus i'd want to keep him at the Club to hopefully look after the under 18's, because, quite frankly Rooster hasn't got a clue

Its probably my biggest issue with retaining Hughes long term the reluctance to let go older players and move on. I agree we have to retain a certain amount of experience, but not at the expense of allowing younger more dynamic players into the equation. I really can see Adam, Johnson & Bardsley be given new deals which would really clog up our squad and stop what is an ideal summer to rebuild and revitalise the squad. I wonder if Coates sees it that way as well?

2 sides of him really, we can get a player who gives the ball away most of the match, or provides decent crosses in from corners, free kicks, and open play.
Sad to say he is past his best for me. He's been a great player for us.

You think an Arsenal fan could be the font of all football knowledge? Impossible! To be fair, she is well versed in all things footy and gets the bigger picture. And she thinks Wenger should have gone seasons ago and doesn't like my Charlie and Dicko battering Arsenal players fridge magnets (which I have displayed on the white board in my office).

From a squad point of view, we need some wiggle room to make improvements and midfield is an area we need serious improvements in.
Butland Grant Given Bachmann
Johnson Bardsley
Shawcross Muni Indi Wolly
Pieters
Shaq
Whelan Cameron Allen
Adam Afellay Imbula
Arnie Ramadan
Bojan Ireland
Berahino Crouch Walters Joselu Diouf
I've discounted Bony and put Indi in because I hope we sign him!
The red are the players who either I don't think will be here next or there's a good chance they won't be.
With the impending potential situation at the back you can see why they wouldn't want too much of a overhaul in midfield but it really is needed when you see them written down.

If he wants to be a player who features week after week, we should let him go. If he is comfortable with being a bit part player then we can keep. On his day can change a game with one strike but cannot play a regular part in the squad if we want to keep moving forward. (much as I love the guy).
