Wasn't Peter Shilton 50 when he played for Leyton Orient in the late 90s?

I can vaguely remember him playing up front against England in the Umbro Cup when Platt got the winner. That must have been around 1995-ish.

The quality of journalism nowadays is abysmal. Even as a 10 year old I knew that Sir Stan wasn't the oldest player ever to play in a professional football match. That honour belongs to Neil McBain who played in goal for New Brighton v Hartlepool in 1951 aged 51 due to an injury crisis at the club. Sir Stan was the oldest regular player, the oldest outfield player and the oldest to play in the top division.

I'm 56 and play regularly in my local 5 a side league does that count. The quality's about the same as in the Japanese Leagues after all.

Obafemi Martins is still kicking round somewhere and he is at least 76.
Also there's that 'teenager' trapped in the body of an old man at Lazio to.

Sir Stan was the oldest regular player, the oldest outfield player and the oldest to play in the top division. There was a Mexican guy, Salvador Reyes, who started a game for Chivas at 71 years old. It was a tribute to a past legend of the club and they subbed him seconds after he took the kick-off, but it was a league game and he was officially named in the starting lineup.
