I had a little too much time on my hands this morning and decided to research the Boney M track, "Ma Baker". Apart from finding out that the lyrics were based of a person called Ma Barker, (Ma Baker sounded better), I discovered the the music was based off a traditional Tunisian folk song called Sidi Mansour.
Here are the two versions and I wonder about other pop and rock songs that have old roots?

I think most of Led Zeppelins back catalogue has older roots I remember rock musicians could use the term 'traditional arrangement by..' with old folk tunes and pocket the royalties. The English Civil War by The Clash is a good example of that.

One of the GREATEST songwriters of all time is a guy from the 30's called Arthur Alexander......anyone heard of him?
Nope, me neither UNTIL I dug into his work over the weekend and WOW!!!!!
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis and many others have owed their success to this man.
Admittedly they did have mega success but without the lyrics and music arrangement of this man, I wonder how far they would have got.
If you get chance check out some of his work

Or just change 1 name like Manilow did. Barry Manilow, someone I cannot abide with, and now to drive my opinion of him down even more, he ripped off that song. For all these years I have at least gave him some credit for writing the song
