No where I would venture as like it or not the leader is what the voters focus on and not the policies, it's the same problem for Labour with their marmite leader Corbyn.
I don't think there is a wave of love for the Tories however their opposition is non existent at this time.
I found it hard watching May touring a pot bank when under a Tory government of the 9 I worked on 8 are shut and the other is only a museum.

Those numbers look like there was a really low turnout, 7.5k winner, 5k 2nd place. The story may have changed to show a copeland win for tories

I was in no doubt labour would win stoke from the beginning but, there's no denying, ukip are looking a spent force since farage left, mrs May talking the talk and all the embarrassments from various members Be in no doubt, labour are washed out too

He looks like a bovver boy. And looks like a NF skinhead. He's scouse. What went through his head that he could win in Stoke. The right candidate could have won For me UKIP now seems all about a few prominent people self publicising themselves.

When a sitting Tory government take a strong labour seat you know you are in trouble Well done jezza This - from all anecdotal evidence Stoke was a vote against Nuttal and Copeland a vote against Corbyn. A local UKIP candidate might have got home. Serves Labour right for their disgraceful vote Conservative and your babies will die. Jezza marches on Labour are actually spinning Copeland as some kind of victory to push the Tories to within 2,000 votes when they are 18 pts behind in the polls despite the seat being Labour for 80 odd years. The bigger question is will this 9% swing start a chicken run to quit as MP's amongst other sensible Labour MP's.

37% turnout in Stoke.
A bi-election on a national level given the interest.
This in no way can be spun on an endorsement of labour.
Keep going jezza. You are proving your distractors right

Congratulations Labourites. I believe Gareth Snell will be a fine representative of our constituency. He is a bit rough around the edges of course, but there can be little doubt he is someone who cares deeply about this area and has an understanding of the issues facing this great city. As a man who has lived in the area for years and has started a family here I believe he is better placed to serve than Hunt ever was, or than Nuttall would've been.
With regards to UKIP and Nuttall, I make no apologies for stating that my political leanings are most aligned with UKIP policies. However, I mentioned yesterday that I decided not to vote for Nuttall. In my eyes the Hillsborough gaffe was unforgivable. OK, maybe Nuttall didn't create that website so wasn't the person actually making the claim that he lost close friends in the disaster. (for some sort of sick political gains!!) However, you have to imagine that at some point he would've found ten minutes to have a scan over the website that had been created in his honour. By not having that "embellishment" removed he effectively sanctioned it. Or, on the off chance he never looked at the website, well quite frankly I would view that as a severe mistake too and an exhibition of gross carelessness that would lead me to question his suitability to be our MP.
I understand people wanted a big change for Stoke-On-Trent and, if the right candidate had emerged I would've backed that change too. However, what I will say as consolation for my fellow right-wingites is this. I think that the vast majority of us, whatever our political leanings, will agree that the fundamental bedrock of our western-democratic societies is that everyone of age has the opportunity to exercise their democratic right in the ballot booth. The voting slip does not discriminate, it gives us all the chance to feel a part of something much greater than ourselves, and to effect real change on our communities and the way we live. Western ways may not be perfect, but a strong democratic society is the best system available. This is a huge reason why I want to see The EU collapse and fall. I fundamentally believe The EU perniciously and deliberately erodes the democratic powers of ordinary citizens.
With all this in mind, I am fully of the opinion that a weak Labour party is a terrible thing for our country. I am very right-wing and Labour are clearly not so whilst I have respect for left-wing outlooks and the old definition of anti-establishment views, I do believe that the vision that the left (the far-left) have for our society is naive and wrong in present circumstances. Orders and systems are totally necessary at this time in history. However, I believe it is absolutely fundamental to have a viable left/centre-left party representing people who align with their views. That's not to say I'm not concerned with the move towards the far-left in recent times under Corbyn's stewardship, and part of me believes Labour might need to collapse altogether before rising from the rubble. But, as a democracy lover I believe Labour needs to be strong even if I may never end up voting for them.
This isn't a bad result for any of us. Gareth Snell will do a good job IMO, and if he doesn't, hopefully we will have a viable alternative that represents real change come the next election.

The sad thing is labour do not have a credible alternative to Corbyn. They do however have a few hundred thousand £3 members. There is a lot happening in U.K. At the moment Brexit, GM selling Vauxhall etc. We need a strong labour opposition to keep the govt on its toes. It's not all about laughing at labour. It's pity because labour are having little influence on govt. Brexit has split labour more than the EU did to the tories.

There's a lot in what you say but Labour's opposition is still focused on itself. The only way Corbyn will step down is if he can choose his heir from the hard left assuming they are not stupid enough to go for an Abbott or McDonnell they are left with people who are hardly known outside their own family. Longer term Sadiq Khan will try and become leader i'm sure.

Portillo said last night that the perfect Conservative scenario was a win in Copeland together with a Labour hold in Stoke which did just enough to keep Corbyn in a job.

A wasted vote. That's not exclusive to UKIP. Unfortunately every parliamentary vote cast in Stoke since 1935 has been a 'wasted' vote if you didn't vote Labour. Consequently, we have the city we deserve.
