Interesting discussion had with my mate yesterday, thought id put it in here! What current players do you think would drop into the lower leagues (league 1/2 or lower) after Stoke when they hit the later years of there career ? or to the USA ect.
Couldn't see Arnie playing at the vale at the age of 35
Given? League 1 Whelan? League 1 Shaq? China/USA

I think all of them potentially though it's more likely that those not born and raised in Britain would return to their own countries and, perhaps, play there.

Why would Whelan drop to League 1?
I'd say none of them bar a youth player or someone like Haugaard

Bardo, Walters and Adam definitely would I reckon.
Adam (and this isn't a fat joke) just has the air of someone who'd be go through the leagues and end up playing Sunday football for fun.
I think Whelan will probably end up retiring here unless he can get a gig in America.

The money is that good now a lot of long term prem players just retire as they should have fortunes in the bank
Looking at whelan as an example
If we let whelan go in the summer if the money and location suited he could get a newly promoted club e.g. Wednesday. It would be worth 20k a week to have him in the dressing room. Prem experience cannot be undervalued
It's not worth the hassle to whelan to get kicked around league 1 and champ by journeyman or young wannabee players for fun just to earn a smaller amount for a couple of years. Different to those who need the money or the buzz.
That's not to put the lower leagues down but they won't go there unless they have too

Surely Given will retire after this contract? He's 40 already, not sure he'd have that many suitors even down the leagues... Shaq to China could be a good shout, fits the profile.

I'm sure I've read/made up that Given will ease into our Goalkeeping coaching set up. Got the feeling that that was a plan in progress until Jack's injury. That'd be a decent move. Crouchie to China would be my plan... on loan with a condition that he has "Peter Crouch of Stoke City" on the back of his shirt. Think Abbey would prefer LA though.

Knowing our luck we'll be sending Berahino out to Oldham in 2 years time.
