Upgraded the handset and kept the same network, EE in this case. The old phone is obviously locked to them but so that my mum can use it for her PAYG will an EE shop do it for nothing (as has been suggested) or is it possible to DIY with a code bought off tinternet. Any suggestions?.

I'm afraid I don't know Chuffed but for local EE stores the one in Newcastle is way better than the one up Hanley.

I doubt EE will unlock one of their phones. They'll probably offer you a PAYG EE SIM deal for your Mum.
Or, many independent street corner electrical shops do unlocking.
