I think someone asked Gary Neville about this on Twitter and he brought up the viewing statistics. Apparently the viewing figures for United / Wigan were 8 times larger than Sutton / Leeds. I'm not saying that it's right, but from a business perspective it makes sense for the TV companies to air teams or games that will attract the biggest audiences. However that is not a valid comparison as Manchester Utd/Wigan was on Free to Air and Leeds/Sutton was on subscription only. If you used that analysis then the fact that the England's womens World Cup semi final 2015 (live on BBC) drew a bigger domestic audience than any Sky premier league game shown in the previous season would lead you to the conclusion that women's cup football on free to air was the future of sports broadcasting in the UK Maybe it is.
