Really enjoyed that article.
In a modern world of disappointing croissants and fancy tapas that don't fill you up, Glenn Whelan is a humble but satisfying potato.

Good article. I love Glenn. Not as much as some and I know a wank fest from one poster is on its way...!
The range of passing quote made me smile.

Fed up with all this bullshit about a "Whelan upgrade" he's one player we don't need to worry about atm People still don't see how important he is for us without him we seam vulnerable and disorganized.

Glenn has put in the hard miles for Stoke City and he is hard as nails. You only have to see his fearless ice bucket challenge to get the measure of the man

How many millions have we spent on players seen as potential "Whelan replacements" over the years? 40 or 50?

The consummate pro. I've been a 'Stokie' since 1950 when I was 9 years old. Seen them all, and seen many better players, but I've never seen anyone give more than Glen does. I can't think of a single Stoke side that wouldn't have had him in the squad. One of Stoke's best buys ever, and like Mama, his fame will be that 'We need someone (insert younger etc.) to fit the Whelan role'. That ice bucket challenge sums him up... He didn't even flinch! OS.

I really hope that when Glenn does hang up his boots that the club gives him a testimonial against top opposition. Either a major national side or, maybe, a British eleven. If anyone deserves a big crowd at the Brit* to wish him well in retirement it is Glenn. * it will always be the Brit to me - sorry Denise!

Absolutely spot on summary of Glenn. I've been going since 64/65 and you're correct in suggesting Glenn would walk into any Stoke side over that period of time. The only other player I'd say was a close comparison to him, in my time as a Stoke fan, would be John Mahoney, who I was a big fan of too. Hudson, Greenhoff, Ritchie and the likes got most of the plaudits but it was Mahoney who did the spade work for them, much like Glenn does now.

I would endorse every word of the support for Glenn. An underated player, top pro, fierce competitor and a terrific servant to our club.
His last minute equaliser against Villa with a low drive from the edge of the box might have been the moment when players and supporters thought that we could just stay in the Premier League.
Often noted that when Glenn plays well, Stoke tend to play well.
And yet, I have still found myself defending him to some of our own supporters. It's a strange one...

The only other player I can think of who meets OS's accurate appraisal of Whelan is Eric Skeels. Like Whelan, Eric was not the most gifted of footballers but just like Whelan his commitment was faultless. Denis Smith rated his as the best man marker he'd ever seen. You don't seem to see much man-marking in football these days. Eric was often tasked with marking the opposition's star player and most of the time said star player failed to shine. Whelan's performances are always no nonsense and workmanlike, but I have to say sometimes he exasperates me and his errors, when they occur from time to time, do tend to be costly.

Worthy of the joining the list of legends in my opinion.
January 30th 2018 will be his 10th season with us. He deserves a testimonial.

I love a bit of Glenda, I hope he stays involved with Stoke after he hangs up his boots as a coach for the youngsters.
I must say I was surprised when I read this:
"I'm not one for statistics, but it comes as no surprise to me that when the Premier League pass success chart appears on Sky Sports News, Glenn's name is always up there alongside the big names."
Is that for real??? Some of his simple 5 yard passing is atrocious

I can see the comparisons with Skeels and Mahoney. Mike Bernard would be another. Not necessarily an attacking midfielder who gets all the glory, but the man who makes the team tick. Later on, Brian Talbot came into Mick Mills's team and made it work - an old pro who filled that role really well.
Glenn will be a hard act to follow. It has proved difficult enough to find an adequate replacement never mind an upgrade.

Sure we need an upgrade, don't we? It's extraordinary the amount of pretenders that Glenn has seen off. There was some little rumours recently in one of the red tops about him moving on. Glad to see that was quickly buried.

Just fails to mention that when Aaron Ramsey was lying in agony, and his team mates were all chasing the referee, it was Glen Whelan who looked after him until the medics arrived...top man. Makes you proud to be a potter!

He is passionate about his football and he cares
From the first whistle to the last he would never let himself down, which means he will never let the club down.
Can we have ten other players on the pitch with the same attitude please :-)
