I don't know if people remember but he sustained a bad injury while driving his car in London during that hurricane in 1987, a piece of debris whipped up by the wind speared thru the windscreen into his head, it was touch and go for a while else he might have left us then.

Loved Allo Allo and used to watch some of the repeats on Gold. Rene was brilliantly played by Gordon Kaye.
RIP.

As Chuff says, it was indeed a masterpiece, right up there with Dad's Army and Fawlty Towers. Only Gorden Kaye could have played Rene, just as only John Cleese could have played Basil.
Thanks for the memories Gorden. You'll never be forgotten. RIP.

I shall say zis only once...RIP Gordon, and thanks for the memories... Did they ever find the painting of the fallen Madonna with the big boobies by Van Klompf? I bet crafty old Rene has still got it rolled up in a knockwurst.

Very sad news. I remember watching 'Secret Army' when I was young and loved every second of it. 'Allo Allo' was heavily inspired by 'Secret Army' and I had severe doubts if a sitcom-version of it would be appropriate and/or worth watching. How wrong could I be. 'Allo Allo' is a true masterpiece loaded with great characters and hilarious situations. And René was the hub of it all.
RIP, Gordon, and thanks for all the joy you brought us.
