Joe Mercer stands high. His comment about Stan Bowles " If only he could pass a betting shop like he could pass a ball" summed him up.

I never met him but I knew several people who knew him well and they confirmed what I always thought, that Waddo always seemed like a decent and likeable bloke. Have to agree, my dad once had a drink with him in the North Stafford Hotel, I'm told he used to like the odd glass of scotch.

Johan Boskamp please step forward.... Dreadful mardarse of a man. Come on you boring fucker he was hilarious. Sheet football manager but those interviews were comedy gold. I like Holloway a lot for similar reasons he's just entertaining to listen to.

Ask Jan De Konning I if he was hilarious! Oh he was though, that tantrum he threw over the note was funny as fuck. Pearson's quite entertaining too. Wouldn't want any of them to be our manager but they would certainly liven the press conferences up. Face facts both Sparky and Pulis are boring as fuck their interviews would send a glass eye to sleep.

Thought you meant John Houghton ex port vale. Whom I have had business dealings with and was allegedly a bit unpleasant at times. If you know what I mean. But I think you mean Chris Hughton, the Brighton manager. Try more detail like the Christian name or preferably the correct spelling. The most likable manager I have come across was Keith Alexander the Macclesfield Town manager. I had some dealings with him and he was a superb person and a real football man. linkI'm guessing you mean Brian Horton? His brother John was MD at King Ford in Fenton. I still used to see John now and then up to a couple of years ago.

Alec Stock. Vic Buckingham. Both absolute gentleman but somewhat eccentric.

I never met him but I knew several people who knew him well and they confirmed what I always thought, that Waddo always seemed like a decent and likeable bloke. Had dinner with Waddington and Keith Humphries at an APSCIL do in the 8o's. Alright he was a lush, but a real, honest gentleman who held court with some brilliant stories. Was genuinely grieved what he died.

Dreadful mardarse of a man. Loosely translated as "He wasn't Tony Pulis." Actually translated as he had the body of a rhino but the skin thickness of a fairy. He tried to get a lifelong colleague and friend sacked as well as a senior club employee. Great TP displacement once again though, using just his very name to diminish the clear wrongdoings of others. There's definitely a series in this

Allthough not brill managers, our own Asprey, Eastham, Mills and Ball seemed nice fellers.

The thing is, to do well a football boss needs to be single-minded, stubborn and self-confident (bordering on arrogant) so it would be hard to find a "nice" guy amongst the top ones imho. Ranieri really does seem to buck this trend...although Leicester fans (some) are now screaming for his head!

There's definitely a series in this I wonder if Boskamp, for all his limitations as a manager, ever been taken to court for fraud? And you could probably give him a run for his money when it comes to whinging.

Agree with Leicpotter that managers need to be ruthless but I'll add some more:
*Ron Greenwood (despite how he's portrayed in Bobby & Tina tv series).
* Bertie Mee (despite them being a pain to Stoke in FA cup semi's)
* Bill Shankly
* John Lyall
* Frank O'farrel
* Dave Sexton
* Dennis Smith
* John Sillet

Although I only met the guy once, I thought John Rudge seemed a pretty decent bloke.

Most modern day managers are OK until it goes against them - then they turn into colossal shit houses. Poch I reckon is a good lad.
