I was trying to justify the time, cost and emotional investment involved in supporting Stoke, to a colleague with no interest in football, earlier on today. I found myself reminiscing about times gone by. Remembering the song "where's your father, where's your father, where's your father referee?"
Also I've come to realise that the worst thing about the premier league is that stupid yellow ball! The first sign of snow during any boring game during winter, The Boothen would bounce to "orange ball, orange ball, orange ball!!"
It's the simple things I guess, any other examples? Anyone particularly miss the City Slickers or something?!

Miss that the older grounds at some clubs were situated better regarding a pub crawl on way to it. Also being able to just turn up to games not needing a ticket and not being ripped off with on-the-day rail fares.

The crackly commentary from European games and the thrill of a live game on the TV. Sky etc have simply killed football for the working man.

I miss the Jaton Junior Potters. What was Jaton? Jaton used to be based up Vicky road (behind Halfords etc in huge sheds that stretch to Eastwood Hanley's ground) - think they were steel stockholders. They were shirt sponsors for Parkway Clayton in the 80's too.

The end of terrace souvenir shop
'Land of Smoke and Glory'

The teams running out of the tunnel at the start of the game.
There used to be a real urgency to get on with the game, and we'd still be singing 'We'll Be With You' by the time the teams kick-off.
Now we could sing the full version of Kraftwerk's Autobahn when they come out of the tunnel and we'd be finished by kick-off.

The Golden Goal Girl walking around the ground with a chalk board showing the time of the first goal. She always wore a short skirt and retained her composure when walking past the Boothen despite chants such as ''get your tits out for the lads''. Happy days I genuinely feel sorry for the youth of today who could get the time of the goal by looking at their smartphones - I much prefer the old way!

The clock in the corner of the Boothen and Butler street stand. The old Butler street roof. Mudbath pitches. Rosettes. The Sentinal "Green Un". The Boothen end steps.

Being able to decide to go to a match and simply hand over your hard earned cash at the turnstile rather than the faffing around you have to do these days.

Stein sprinting to from the tunnel to the centre spot, doing his stretches while we lorded him steino. There's only one steino.
Loved wilkos testimonial when he came on, brought a tear to my eye. I only wish he could of scored before wilko did.
Also the toilets in the boothen. The smell was amazing !!

When I went as a lad the bloke next to my dad used to smoke cigars and the slight waft (not bellowing amounts) of cigar smoke would always remind me of the Vic, crazy I know but as a boy I used to associate cigar smoke with watching my beloved Stoke City.

The pub crawl from The Sea Lion to the Vic.
Getting free tickets for every home game.
The 'edginess' that seemed to be there a lot of the time, not to everyones taste I know but I liked it :)

I miss the Jaton Junior Potters. What was Jaton? James & Tatton, bit like FWB. The smell of tobacco and deep heat & bovril walking up the steps in the Boothen Stand.

Grew up in the 90s, so I only really caught the tail end of the good old days:
- My Dad lifting me up onto his shoulders when we scored.
- Following away games on Ceefax. Letting the results cycle through until it came back to our page and we'd scored. Cue a mental around the television:
Stoke City 2-1 Portsmouth Pickering 78 Durnin 69 Lightbourne 90
- Loads of men in pubs after the game with a copy of the Green 'Un.
- Being genuinely frightened of some of Stoke fans my Dad would drink with.
- Being genuinely terrified the first time I was on a terrace.
- Junior Potter booklet to enter team line ups and results through the entire season.

I just miss standing up, for a start, and the feeling of being in a ground that was "ours", not some soul-less corporate "stadium" with rip-off prices for everything and poor quality at that. I started out standing on the Boothen Paddock and every few minutes the smell of beer wafted out of the air-extractors in the side of the bar behind. That, and the hot dog smell, just great.
And, actually, the fact that there always seemed to be lots of very pretty young women supporting the team, don't seem to see much of that now ( tin hat on..... )

And...now I think about it, the reviving years later of the "time of goal" boards, and it being Jackie Marsh's daughter who did it.
Didn't last very long, and I can't recall her name, and she's probably a Granny by now, but she looked very decent
