In a heartbeat. Cup run or not, I don't see us finishing top half this season.

If we played close to how we can then yes.
The no cup run bit would bother the Chairman though I suspect.

I'd snap your hand off for ninth now.
Don't think we look good enough to be top ten at the moment. Cup run would be great, and who knows, maybe it'll positively impact our league form like 2011?

Yes but I feel we'll finish somewhere between 10-14 with our inconsistency.

No because I don't think we're going to be in any danger of relegation, so although I don't think we'll finish 9th either I'd feel pretty good in taking the gamble and possibly finishing higher/winning the cup.

It's looking like another season of missed opportunities. Fully fit squad and we can easily be where West Brom are now but we, for whatever reason, never get a run of games with all our best players firing.

Probably because Hughes never sticks to the same starting eleven from one game to the next. That's a major part of why we're so inconsistent, oh and Hughes doesn't have a clue about his best eleven and best formation!

If you guaranteed me 9th spot playing like we did last night, I wouldn't take it no.
It was so bloody unnecessary. We played well in defeat to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and played well for long spells v Leicester.
If the only way we can pick up points moving forward is to play like we did last night, I'd rather we didn't bother.
Where has the positive, we can beat anyone mark Hughes gone?

Weren't some using this as the exact excuse for our drop off after christmas last year, that he picked the same 9 or 10 players every game over the busy christmas period? The reason we dont pick the same 11 at the minute is because we have get many niggly injuries in training, which is a whole other conversation

Yes but I feel we'll finish somewhere between 10-14 with our inconsistency. That is our consistency We are a 14-9 or there abouts stable mid table club. Our results and performances dictate that. Nothing wrong about it and in this football climate it's a very good place to be

Fair enough Some of those have been shockingly inconsistent though, Shaq and Bojan to name but two. Both are either brilliant or completely useless

Hardly anyone has a fully fit squad. All teams get injuries and I'm not sure we've suffered particularly badly this year. Butland is an obvious long term omission but other than that we've pretty much had a fit squad for Deecember and for the most part we were shite. It's not like if we could only get Muniesa, Cameron and Ireland fully fit we'd suddenly be pushing for Top 6. In squad terms we've struggled because of piss-poor recruitment and a failure to provide decent cover for known weaknesses. Fact that prior to Grant arriving we had FOUR fully fit goalkeepers available to play in the first team. None of whom are deemed competent to cover for Butland tells you what you need to know.

Afellay back, a new striker and a collective return to form could present us with 8th and a good cup run
Together with the extension ...
That would be good progress

I'm 100% with you and proud we are a midtable PL club as you say in this football climate it's a positive position to be in. The thought of struggling every year like Sunderland would be a fucking non stop head thrash or worse Leeds, Blackburn, Nottingham Forest etc...

None of the tier 2 teams are really pulling away, so 9th is the least we should get, maybe 8th...I'd settle for top dogs in the Midlands again, just to wipe the smile off whats his name...

I'd take 40 points and move on this season , been a struggle right from the pre-season with constant injuries and changes.
A settled side with cover in all areas by the end of the season safe from relegation is the target for me.

the middle of the table is very tight we could finish 9th quite easily without i being as impressive as previous seasons doesn't look like there will be much difference points wise 8th to 14th or so
I think we will beat Wolves but a cup run is as dictated by the draw as much as anything Chelsea away in the 4th round, for e.g. you would expect to get beat

I would be disappointed with 40 points Hughes sides normally (last season being the glaring exception) perform better (& often significantly better) second half of the season than they do the first 50 points is not an insane target as for being safe from relegation I think 33 or 34 points will probably keep you up this year
