I've just read that there will be a new 12-sided one Pound coin introduced on 28th March. This has been designed to make it more difficult to counterfeit and is described as "the most secure coin in the world" . We will then have till October to spend the current design coin.
So get checking your piggy banks to make sure you're not left with the old ones !!

I read that about 50% of the pound coins are counterfeit that why this is being done. Yes it's been a big problem and I can't remember how much it's supposed to have cost the country as a result. The new one will cause quite a lot of initial problems but should hopefully overcome the counterfeiters, at least for a period of time, although it's thought that the new design is just too difficult to try to copy.

D'oh. They should have made a new 99p coin. Golden opportunity lost yet again IMO.
