When Stoke are in a wobble the same cliches & quotes come about which really annoy me. Here are a few:
"Be careful for what you wish for"
used as an excuse for having no ambition, the idea that we should be happy with our lot, even if that lot is currently poor football and increasingly poorer results.
people who say this then use Charlton as an example, even though their decline is mainly because of bad decisions at board room level.
"x years ago we lost to x team in x division"
used as a reason why we should be grateful for today's team, even if it's just had a battering. I know we were crap 15 years ago but that's a big reason why I want us to be better now. I want us to forgot that era and move on. We have better, much better players then we had then.
"little old Stoke"
used to make out that we are one of the smallest teams in the league. Based on club stature, resources, etc I'd say we're equal/bigger than Bournemouth, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Hull, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Swansea, Watford & West Brom at least. I would add in Leicester if it weren't for their league title. We're hardly miles off Southampton & West Ham either.
Any more?

time will tell used as a reason to give a manager, player, whatever more time based on nothing other than you think it will turn around. It often doesn't.

They're usually used by people who fear change. They fear change in football because change is associated with failure, crisis, disaster. Yet in other walks of life managed change is a perfectly accepted method of avoiding those things in the first place. Bringing in fresh ideas, new practices and keeping levels of enthusiasm high. Avoiding stagnation, cliques and misplaced loyalty.

Used to be we're 8th FFS. Now it's we've finished ninth for three seasons running.

I take great pains not to talk in cliches, a cliche to me is like a red rag to a bull. However there is 1 cliche that sums up our situation quite nicely - It's never too late for a leopard to change horses in midstream.

I will be happy between 7 - 10th in the league with a cup final thrown in . The cup final won't happen to often and now and again we may be lower than 10th. Do i lack ambition? Am i being greedy?

I don't expect us to be winning the league, or even top 4. I just expect us to get top 10, a good cup run and some good football with the players we have. I expect some competent management, and give the big teams a proper test more often. When we go on a poor run, I hope that people notice this and ask questions. Not go on about that time we lost at home to Wycombe or whatever. Basically I expect more from a good squad to be scrapping our way to 13th place.

He's been a great servant to the club
He couldn't score in a brothel
We couldn't defend the Alamo
He's that fit his nose runs
He's lost the plot
He couldn't catch a cold

If if's and an's were pot's and pan's, There'd be no room for tinker's. If Stoke had a consistent team, There'd be no room to tinker! Coat, get, I'll, me!
