So today I got into a very heated discussion with my boss today who is a West Ham fan about "who is a bigger club" Stoke or West Ham. I also work with lots of City and United fans too given I work in Macclesfield. Anyway I think West Ham and Stoke are very similar size clubs, and i said that today and it nearly caused ww3. My boss was getting frustrated at me saying this and claimed West Ham will and always have been a bigger club. When I asked why he couldn't give me a logical answer, and come out with if you ask a spurs, Chelsea or Milwall fan they will all say they are. I laughed and kept replying yes but tell me why your bigger and I will change my mind. Guess what.. nothing apart from look who's above you in the league!! So I replied since Stoke have been in the premier league we have finished above the 5 out of 8 seasons. Still he replied Back saying look at the attendances we have. Anyway... do you agree with me or am I just too passionate?? 442

West Ham are bigger than us.
Won more, bigger fan base, based in the City (which counts for a lot!), batshit mental owners that will spend bucket loads of cash, huge stadium.
Sadly, no comparison.

Short-term league position is not a particularly useful metric for judging a club size. By that logic Portsmouth and Sheffield United are much smaller clubs than Bournemouth.
West Ham are clearly a bigger club than us. It's not even close.
You should get out of the mentality of judging greatness by comparing size. The greatness of Stoke City Football Club isn't that we're bigger than the vast majority of football clubs in Britain, and the shortcomings aren't that we're smaller than a handful. Our qualities and inadequacies are completely independent of that parameter.

It's always a tough debate, especially with a non impartial supporter, and TBH i'd say WHU are bigger. I'd say in the prem, other than the big 6 Everton and WHU are bigger than us, and we are on a par with WBA, Southampton, and Sunderland... Leic was a flash in the pan, and are boxing way above their weight. Outside the Prem prob Newcastle are bigger, Leeds, Wolves and maybe Forest about the same...

Sadly , wet sham are a huge club. The only club side to of ever won the World Cup, they gave us the magical total football thing with the West Ham way! For the last few years they've absolutely train wrecked there way through life. There fans like all cockneys are loud bellends that drink shandy but sadly outnumber us by lots. There ground has corners (sorry the tax payers ground) they have more celebrity fans , I give you Danny dyer, ray winstone and the whole of the British media.

Another example: Stoke city twitter followers: 642k West Ham twitter followers: >1 million Unfortunately there are also teams in the lower divisions like Newcastle and Villa that are actually bigger football clubs than Stoke; they are just going through a poor performance patch and not as successful at the moment. Throughout history there are many players and managers who have gone from Stoke to Sunderland as an upward step. When they move the other way it has usually because Sunderland have (r)ejected them. It's a sobering thought that Derby have bigger attendances than Stoke. When you realise how low is Stoke's status in the football world, it is more understandable why the club finds it difficult to attract players and how well Hughes has done to persuade some of our present star players to come to Stoke and keep us in the top half of the Prem. I'm afraid your colleagues in Macclesfield are right. I have lived outside North Staffordshire in many parts of the country since 1966 and to most of the British public Stoke is off the radar and a high proportion don't even know where it is, particularly south of Birmingham.

That's very true. I live down south and people who don't follow football have no more idea than the man on the moon where Stoke is. Personally I like it that way but we are about as far from 'big-time' as it is possible to be.

Much bigger and better city, tho not better people. Much more prestige and one of the four, big London clubs.
Buy you boss a pint of jellied eels and half a dozen oatcakes, then tell him our ground and our local delicacy are far better
