Didn't it look like we were destined for the title after this win?

Oh Jimmy Jimmy and Huddy back heeling it on that quagmire. I know its been said loads of times but Hudson and Greenhoff were two of the best players I had the privilege of seeing in a Stoke shirt. As shown in that clip,it didn't matter what state the pitch was in. Never tire of seeing footage of those two, superb.

Sometimes I think it's red and white tinted childhood memories, but Christ, they were good footballers.
Greenhoff's technique on both those goals is incredible - two entirely different skills. Hudson's back heel volley (!!) to play Salmons in is almost unbelievable as is Salmons crossing. Very attacking line up with Hudson, Salmons, Greenhoff, Moores and Hurst - looked like Huddy was floating and trying to play on the grass where he could.

Remember it so clearly. Only a kid at the time, could barely see the game. Had to take shelter in someone's front yard after the match as the Stoke lads came bursting out of the ground intent on 'rounding off' their afternoon! Amazing how these things stay with you and yet I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday!!

Pretty sure this was the game I saw my uncle being marched past my Dad and me on the perimeter track by two coppers.
Think they were taking him for an early cup of tea, queues for catering must have been long...

Just one broken leg too many that year.
That team was the best I have ever seen and probably the best I ever will see playing for Stoke.

I was there that day. Bet Ronaldo wouldn't look as classy trying his step overs on that pitch

Geoff Salmons. He was a fantastic footballer and in any other Stoke team would have been THE man. Unfortunately overshadowed most of the time by Huddy and Greenhoff

I was there too , great times.
I know you should never try to compare players from different eras but !!!!!!!
I would only say that if Greenhof , Hudson , Salmons had the benefits of todays training , fitness culture , plastic footballs and pitches with grass they would outplay any of our modern team. Arnautovic ,Shaqiri etc would be off after a minute with a hamstring or some such , they never really seemed to happen then or of they did you played on.

I still feel like jumping up and punching the air when the winner goes in. How did he do that? I've not seen a header like that before or since that day.

Thanks CP!
It's great to remember the "Stoke Folklore Years". Two impressions as I was watching that : How the heck did they play on pitches like that? While their are plenty of individual skills on display, I must say the overall quality of play is much higher these days. That was "the highlights reel" from the game and yet the overall standard was poor. <Tin Hat on>

I was there for that incredible day. That Stoke side contained so many truly great players. What would Jimmy, Huddy, Banksy and Denis be worth today? The Stoke support that day was also incredible. I seem to remember singing 'One fat Sargeant', along with thousands of other Stokies to a particularly overweight copper.

That was "the highlights reel" from the game and yet the overall standard was poor. <Tin Hat on> Quality of pitches. Fitness levels. Physical and diet regimes. It's all relative. Hudson was class then and would be now. Talent and skill in different times and circumstances. Keeping him off the pop though ..?? That may be something even a different era cannot alter haha.

My first away game other than the cup final semi finals on neutral grounds , my dad believed we were seeing history as victory would see us as champions for the only ever time , how stoke city win the hard one and then fail to win in the last three and give Derby' the title back .π

The"theres only one fat sargeant "and "sargeant is a Stokie " game was in the early 80s . Alan Biley was in the derby team and god dogs abuse for the whole game .
