It does seem strange that all seater grounds are blamed on the reduction of singing when folk sing out of their mouths not their arses! Back in the 60's and 70's there was such a vast range of songs sung, many to the tunes of songs in the charts. Lets start naming some of them on here and perhaps the younger end can give it a go. I remember "your gonna get your f...ing head kicked in." Pretty sure it was to the music of Zabadac by Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick and Titch. There was a "clapping" sort of instrumental version too!

ultimately you can't have a back to the walls atmosphere when we're on top against a Burnley or Sunderland.

Fans demand 100% effort from the players yet put 10% in themselves. And anyone that says it should be the players that get the fans going should be banned on here and banned from the ground. Trouble is We'd then be left with an attendance like the vale. And there lies the problem. I'm not really sure what you're saying the atmosphere was not bear pit but not bad either until we scored the second at that point Hughes for whatever reason decided to turn the side off and see the game out with getting on for an hour to play. If the crowd is so vital you need to give them something to get behind, going into your shell with an hour to play short changes the crowd.

We need to get more young people into the ground and allow areas where singers can sit together without pissing people off around them. The ground is currently packed full of 40+ year olds who are quite happy to sit on their hands all game which is fair enough really. The boothen has become stale, installing safe standing and removing allocated seating would help a lot in my opinion. Hear what you are saying but not quite correct. We were all young once and stood in the Boothen and sung and chanted and loved every miniute of it. Now that we are" over fourty" as you put it does not mean that we do not get involved in vocal support and just sit on our hands and politely clap. However what we do need, as was in our younger days, is leadership from the Boothen End so that we can join in and follow. Frankly from where I sit in a very vocal section of the Q Railing, surrounded by mainly 40+ year olds, there is more leadership coming from the South End of the ground. So in summary I agree that the atmosphere can at times of late be poor. It has to start somewhere and traditionally and logically that has to be what we always called the "home end". So get em going and the rest of the ground will join in. Raythesailor 60+

All seating stadiums have killed the game in my opinion. When I first started going the match I was left to sit on the railings at the front of the old boothen while my dad went with his mates further back. It always seemed to be where all of the lads went. You used to get a few in the paddock but it was mostly the boothen for the hardcore. Now we haven't got a proper home end where the majority of blokes go like we used to, everybody is scattered everywhere. Safe standing may rescue it a little, who knows. This! We need standing areas again 100%

What is the matter with today's fans?
Everton being booed off at half-time.

What is the matter with today's fans? Everton being booed off at half-time. Not watching the game but if its widespread its probably because they think their ridiculously rewarded stars are not putting on much of a show. If they went out for a meal that cost 5/10% of their weekly income I'm sure if it wasn't right they'd soon let someone know about it.

Ground only responds to Delilah & when the reds go marching in at present.
To much expectation from fans to turn up & roll the opposition over. Hope the new corner will breath some life in to the place.

Standing - make it an away end for home fans as strange as it sounds. It's the only way I can see.

We really are embarrassing at home. Away fans must wonder if they're actually at Stoke. We've become complacent and lots expect us to win every home game. Said it before, the novelty of the Premier league has well and truly worn of for our 'newer' fans, whose expectations are unrealistic. Some of the shit I hear from so called fans is quite frankly staggering. I'd rather sit next to an empty fucking seat than one of those. Wankers.

The atmosphere will get better as our European push gains more momentum. Sadly, if we were currently sitting in 5th spot, I don't think the atmosphere would be very much different. As has been said further up the thread, it's all about the return of standing. Palace being the only exception.

So basically you just want to be gritty little stoke and hate the growth of the club and its fanbase. Can't stand anyone who thinks that given the ability of the players in our squad and the vast wealth they are accumulating being here expects them to be able to put on a decent standard of football. To be perfectly honest you're looking back with rose tinted spectacles, I've been going for well over 30 years and have never been a particularly vocal fan and have always noticed plenty of people who are similar. You're hankering for a period thats unlikely to return without a singing area, safe standing will do nothing to help as its allocated positions and you will be just as likely to end up standing by someone like me and thinking I'm some wanker JCL because I do my football differently to how you've decided you want everyone to behave.

I am convinced a safe standing area if the government would come to there senses and allow it would definitely help improve the atmosphere no end. As stated by others you just can't get into the match the same slumped in your seat, and that's exactly how I feel to be honest.I know it wouldn't be the same as standing on the old terraces at The Vic but it's the next best thing. Fingers crossed we won't have to wait that long before Safe standing is allowed.

I have Season ticket in Boothen End, but was in the South Stand for the Burnley game as we had non-season ticket friends with us. Have to say the Block 36 crowd were giving it a good go throughout the game. As well as the usual ensemble of match day songs (i.e. 'go marching in', 'Delilah', 'go arn Stoke','We'll be with You', etc.) we were treated to some of the old favourite such as the "bread" song, "who are the people", the Christmas "Bass" song (it is December - just!), 'We hate Vale' amongst others. So the City Choir is out there - Hymn sheets at the ready

Most football fans don't understand what they are watching and how to get a atmosphere going.2008-2011 we were always the underdogs so we had aback to the wall attitude .The only time Pepole shout know is if we score,a bad decisions or we play the Arse. Yep, "we play how we want" etc...

Get a time machine and go back 20 years. The sanitisation of football has fully gripped every club. For better or worse, it'll never be as good as it used to be. Even eith our resurgence after promotion.
