In forty years, will people look back on the 2010s and remember three consecutive 9th place finishes, or 5-0 at Wembley, the Cup Final and, to a lesser extent, the semifinal against Liverpool?
Nobody remembers that we finished 17th in the 71/72 season, or 13th the year after that, or 15th the year after that.

I'd rather keep finishing mid-table with the chance of winning a cup or progressing year on year, than win the league followed by being relegated.

Well it is the be all and end all. The longer you're in the Premier League, the better players you attract and keep and the more chance you have of winning something. It is not the be all and end all. I want to see my team win a major trophy. I could tell my grandkids I was there at Wembley to see Stoke win a trophy, 'but Grandpa, were you there when Stoke finished 7th in the Premiership and got knocked out of the cup in the quarter finals though?'. I would give 20 yrs in the championship/league 1 to watch Stoke win a major trophy. I would still be there watching, moaning, chuntering whatever league we are in. But I could go to my grave thinking 'what a fookin day that was when we won the cup'...... Whilst at the same time have your grandkids growing up but all the time them being denied the opportunity to see Stoke City compete in the top flight? When I first started going, I was a kid in the mid 70's and one of the biggest buzzes I used to get was seeing the green BBC trucks parked outside the Vic and knowing we were going to be on the telly. Since then, a whole generation have grown up, never even considering that Stoke City were a top flight club but now a new generation are growing up, who like me have ONLY ever considered Stoke City to be one of the big boys, I wouldn't want another generation to have to grow up believing differently, just so that I could say I'd watched us win the FA cup.

I took my nephew to his first game the other day against palace, he has never known a day that the club has not been in the Prem and cannot even comprehend that there is a league below!

Then getting into the ground and seeing the crappy scaffolding platform above the tunnel with the TV camera's on them, the stuff of dreams that was!

Much rather stay in the league than win the league and get relegated. Compete at the highest level. Compete at the highest level for 7/8/9/10th every season. Not for me. Give me winning a major trophy any day of the week. Ideally, while we are still in the prem as well. But the option given during this thread......a trophy is more important to me than the prem. And that's fair enough. You're entitled to your opinion.

Most people on here seem to equate relegation with never coming back. Look at the baggies for example, they've been up and down a few times and each time they come back they have the high of a great winning season and promotion.
Would I take winning the league but relegation the next season? Every single time! We are the champions.......

It's like getting a cheeky wank off your average looking wife every night or popping one in a model's bumhole then getting your dick chopped off the next morning.

There's a lot more chance of us winning one the longer we remain a good Premier League club, so it's vital that we maintain our status. We were in the lower leagues for 23 years and came nowhere near winning a major trophy. The post turned to would you give up relegation for a major trophy win. Yes I would. In the blink of an eye.

A valid point, I still would swap relegation for a major cup win, possibly purely selfish on my part. Maybe I shouldnt have bought the grandkids line into it?

I would rather the history books show us in the top flight for donkeys years. Or nowadays, the equivalent of the history books is the on-line statistics websites. I'd rather that than risk not being seen in the history books. But its not all about how we as a club are perceived, its the level of enjoyment and success. So, let's think, 2 points for every season in the top division and 25 points for a cup win. That would make it roughly a dozen years in the top flight to equal a cup win. Then, and only then would I contemplate offsetting the enjoyment and memories for relegation, because by that time if we did go down after twelve seasons you would have to point the finger of blame at those in charge for letting us slip that badly.
If we don't win a cup within the next four years, then we can start comparing like for like. Until then, UP THE POTTERS!
