I thought we seemed more confident at the back.indi took the lead role with headers and muni passed the ball well.as in the Bournemouth game,Ryan does struggle against any quicker player.becoming very sluggish in his tackle assessment. Very lucky not to give away a penalty last week.captain or not.,he isn't the player he was.

hmmm, agreed Indi and Mini looked good, but I think to be fair to Ryan here, just because Indi and Muni had a good game and Shawcross wasn't brilliant last Saturday does not mean we should write him off. I would still go with Ryan and Indi as my first choice pairing but nice to know you have Muni waiting in the wings

Zonal marking isn't Ryan's best fit. Some serious head scratching to be done by Hughes this week.

Indi & Muni did look good but Watford offered so little going forward that it's difficult to make any kind of realistic comparison TBH.

I tend to agree to a certain extent with the OP.
As much as a brilliant defender Shawcross is and I'll be absolutely gutted if I see him playing for another club, it must be said he's certainly got some frustrating characteristics which need addressing.
Muniesa certainly seems as though he can pick out a better pass than Ryan. Indi absolutely bossed the back line yesterday and kind of took over the lead role. Muniesa barely put a foot wrong in my opinion.
For me, even when not under pressure, Ryan still persists with that incredibly frustrating long diagonal hoof which 9 times out of 10 goes to the opposite team allowing them to build again. It seems to be only Ryan that does this when the team isn't under pressure. Hughes need to really get him out of it.

I'll be slammed for this but don't underestimate the quality that SJW brought as Captain Rainbow.

We keep clean sheets with Ryan and yesterday we kept one without him.
How do you do that better?

My God I hope Ryan is back when we meet Burnley and that beast of a striker Vokes!

The good news is we have a back up plan and Muni shows he can play as a centre half

Indi & Muni did look good but Watford offered so little going forward that it's difficult to make any kind of realistic comparison TBH. They offered little because with this formation we had complete control of midfield and played mostly in their half. I would be tempted to try it again.

The good news is we have a back up plan and Muni shows he can play as a centre half Go back a couple of days and there are plenty of dissenting opinions that contradict that assertion. Muni is an intelligent player and always has been, but Indi has been a revelation. Ryan's never had the best distribution and it's not going to suddenly get better, but anyone expecting him not to come back automatically is in for a long wait.

Love Ryan and he typifies the Stoke spirit.... however he does seem to hoof the ball up a fair bit with his right boot acting like a 9 iron. Unfortunately whoever our striker is can't control it and we nearly always give the ball away .

I do hope this "minor niggle" Ryan has doesn't do the same as most of our minor injuries and lead to him being out for most of the rest of the season.

Not really Deeney won everything in the air. The three at the back looked interseting at times yesterday

I don't get this Muni love in, he was at best average yesterday and looked very nervous with the ball, and if my memory serves me right gave it away on several occasions. He just is so many levels behind Shawcross.....

Ryan is the best centre half we have.
His distribution is good.
Muni is a good centre back.
Muni played bloody well yesterday.
Happy days.

We might play well without Ryan but we never look better without him.
However well we played yesterday, we'd have looked and played a whole lot better with Ryan in the ranks.

I don't think you can tell much from the Watford game as they were very poor

Hilarious stuff. I suppose we were better without Joe Allen then? And where are the threads bemoaning the fact that we missed Glenn Whelan this week?
Honestly.

Doesn't matter what team is picked we should be behind every player once they are on the pitch.

I liked how Muniesa jumped in and was confident and tough. But for me Ryan is the man, if he's okay to go he plays and if Muniesa is fine filling in for him or Indi he should stay.

We have the second best defensive record in the last eight games (I think), behind Chelsea. Shawcross played in seven of those, but it was good to see Muni come in and do a job, too. All about the squad.

For me, and this mightn't be popular but I think BMI is a better defender than Ryan, however together they are a formidable partnership that seems to be getting better game by game.

Just seen this post - UTTERLY DISRESPECTFUL sir. Ryan has been a giant, and will continue to be for a year or two yet. Yes it was a decent defensive display, but we were hardly under pressure. I like Muniesa and think that Bruno is coming along nicely, but Ryan is our warrior.

If he is fit for the next game, he starts. It's as simple as that. Yes he might not be in the best form of his career but the only way to get the best out of him is to play him week in week out. We all know how good he can be when he's on form. In his first season, Hughes said he was among the 2 or 3 best centre-halves in the country so it's clear the manager really rates him & places a lot of trust in him.
