We all know that police forces have been found to be racist and corrupt. In various cases, they've fabricated evidence, lied on grand scales, looked after their own and generally perverted what many might think of as the course of justice. Is this latest story evidence of institutional homophobia? I mean, you'd have to be either seriously thick or totally unbothered not to catch this nutter sooner www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-d32c5bc9-aa42-49b8-b77c-b258ea2a9205

Institutionally, maybe, maybe not.
I have heard a load of coppers really laying in to gays in a fairly savage way not knowing I have a shit load of gay friends and family. Heard quite a few stories of low level stuff from said friends too.

It's all a load of laughs obvsies, but quite a few more blokes are dead than could have been if the police bothered to investigate.

I dunno about the police force being institutionally homophobic, but I do know of one group of people that are. Just checkout the replies to this Tweet from Liverpool Football Club.

Heard quite a few stories of low level stuff from said friends too. Complex stuff Deano. An organisation is made up of individuals with all their preferences and prejudices that will impact on yr experience. Irrespective of the culture of the organisation. Far too complex an issue for a pithy post, but I thought the comment in the documentary you cited was interesting: "If your only contact with a section of society is policing them, then you'll have a distorted view of those people." A bit of that goes both ways imo. Undoubtedly the Police are becoming more inclusive, less of the creaking organisation state sanctioned thugs and bullyboys, but you want a bit of a macho image in yr coppers surely? I thought the subject of the documentary's fascination with 'Chemical crazed old men orgies' sent the Police a bum steer, probably would have caused a furore if they'd 'stereotyped' the victims too. As with most things it's a balance... Lessons have been learned. On a general note, fuck the police.

I've got most of the detail from the obvious MSM (another term that irks) outlets. I must learn to be less pithy, but it's difficult given past experience on this topic on this very board. Agree on the police point. Fuck em.

Agree on the police point. Fuck em. BBC Iplayer, interview with the second victim's flatmate. 20 minute BBC3 thing. Grndr Killer, the snappy title. It's a tragic tale. The murderer embarked on a net campaign contacting victims' friends, saying they had been murdered in drink and drug sex do's, by old men. The flatmate compiled some kind of non corroborated dossier about these murderous orgies and tried to get the Police and Coroner to pursue this. Dunno. Maybe this was part of the picture that led the police to minimize the victims' sexuality as a factor in their death. Not necessarily simple homophobia I don't think, not that it doesn't exist. I don't think it's officially sanctioned, as it once was. Not that long ago in historical terms it was illegal. I was left with the feeling on this that the flatmate had shaky foundations for doing some high profile finger pointing.

Only vaguely related, the Australian tinder trial recently was interesting. Though obviously much less clear cut.

A bit harsh to just point to the police, I've worked in industry and done a driving job and I can tell you that homophobia and racism was prevalent. Police Officers are recruited from society and there is racism and homophobia in society. So in a nutshell It's a certainty that some police are homophobic and some that aren't, don't think it requires any great insight to come to that conclusion.

I guess the thing is that if you can't view gay people as absolutely equal in terms of their justice rights in this day and age, you probably shouldn't be a copper.

The police are reflective of society....so while homophobia and racism exists in society,by default there will be parts of it in policing. This is no different in any type of job, the main difference being the police are required to use their powers fairly and without prejudice so they are in a position where they could abuse their authority if influenced by these factors. However, the police are so politically correct now and scared of their own shadows, this type of behaviour is hopefully surprised.

The British Police are the best in the world I don't believe one of these stories I've heard 'Bout them raiding our pubs for no reason at all Lining the customers up by the wall Picking out people and knocking them down Resisting arrest as they're kicked on the ground Searching their houses and calling them queer I don't believe that sort of thing happens here
Tim Robinson 1976
Institutionally homophobic - quite possibly.

Certainly wasn't any overt evidence of it when I was in the job, but you just have to hope that people keep any narrow minded bigotry to themselves and never let affect their judgment of others regardless of your job. So in answer to the OP, No.

Agree on the police point. Fuck em. The homophobia has died down somewhat since mumf stuck himself on his latest course of gardening leave. Now there's a man with some seriously aggressive hang-ups about homosexuality. There's still a certain amount of "God created Adam and Eve; he didn't create Adam and Steve" every so often but our very own Dog Whisperer seems to have been the epicentre of the worst stuff

The worse for being bigots are religious people, all creatures great and small and god created them all and loves them except, homosexuals, Lesbians, Transgender etc. I say live and let live and why the hell do people really care what someones sexual orientation is. I have gays friends and transgender friends and they seem no different to my straight friends, just people wanting to live their lives. Unfortunately there are some out there who belief being different gives them the right to batter, bruise and in some cases kill people from minority groups.
Diversity is good and makes the world colourful.
