Its beginning to feel like that with reports that we are worse off now than back in the 40s & 50s!
Are things ever going to get better or will they just collapse to the point of absolute poverty; shanty towns etc
It begs the question, where has all the country's supposed wealth evaporated to??!!

It begs the question, where has all the country's supposed wealth evaporated to??!! Essentially ordinary people's real world salaries have been stagnating for decades. To keep them buying stuff and therefore sustain corporate profits, the financial services industry has been flooding the world with cheap credit and inventing a load of money while they're at it. The chickens are well on their way home to roost because, in simple terms, this way of living isn't sustainable

It would be funny if it hadn't resulted in so much misery

Yep. The neoliberals will tell you that the ever-increasing gap between rich and poor is fine as long as the poor earn "more" than they used to. Even though in real terms salaries simply aren't keeping up with cost of living. It's a bullshit con trick and the people that do best out of it fob people off persuading them to blame immigrants and the like.

We're on the verge of something quite serious. Industry 4.0. We're a bargain basement economy, ie much of the workforce do menial low skilled stuff. What's gonna happen when those jobs no longer exist because AI has developed to a point they're not needed? Universal income may be inevitable.

What's gonna happen when those jobs no longer exist because AI has developed to a point they're not needed? Universal income may be inevitable. Its a bleak future for sure. No doubt it will be a cashless society by then too so everyone will be given a certain amount of electronic credits; no doubt that there will be conditions on what they can be used for as well. That money supply can be turned off at the press of a button. Technological communism. We've sleepwalked into this as well. Attachment Deleted

What happened during the 2008 financial crisis - and more so in the States than here - was a massive transfer of wealth from the middle classes to the top 1%. Since 2009 interest rates have been slashed so savers earn less on their money and the retired who depend on fixed income investments have suffered. The elite already had the money to short the market in 2008 and profit from its collapse. They then piled into the stock market and have ridden the huge wave up ever since. Meanwhile, our previously well paid jobs have been replaced by minimum wage, zero contract and part time jobs. Not all of them obviously, but the employment landscape is starkly different to what it was 10 years ago.
So long as the top 1% control over 50% of our wealth we will always be an unequal society. It's up to us to decide what to do about it.

Do you think the Brexit vote was the modern version of Tyler's peasant's revolt? Is this just the beginning of a revolt against globalism which has benefited the rich and left the ordinary man behind?
It pains me to say but I don't have much faith in the young today. They walk around like zombies with their faces in their smartphones, blissfully unaware of what is going on in the world.

The reality is that nothing can ever really change without armed struggle; its always been the way of the world
We all saw how successful the miners were in 1984 when things got 'heavy'. And our police are a 100 x more militarised now
I remember getting interested in the whole New World Order topic a few years ago, then I stepped back from it, thinking it was all an exercise in paranoia; now I'm really not sure. There might really be something in it. I wonder if Brexit (and the Trump result) have been allowed to happen, under the mantle of a hidden agenda?? if so, I doubt its one that will benefit the 99% of us.
Shame about that asteroid how many million years ago LOL. I reckon the dinosaurs would have made a far better fist of it
its a prison planet now and theres no way off it

If they're using it to watch videos of cats, then I agree. But if they're doing something productive (working, reading the news, learning) then they're not really being unaware. I think the younger generation are all right. They seem to be cracking on OK in a world where the generations above them have badly let them down. Given they're the first generation in a long time that are set to be less well off than their parents, I think they're handling it pretty well.

It is increasingly looking like the government has let everyone down. We seem to have put all our eggs in one basket, lack of investment has left us looking vulnerable and brexit is being blamed when it is infact successive governments who have let the country down.
