I've, still got my mucky old football boots which were last used over 40 years ago. I can't bring myself to throw them away. Also, I've still got my broken badminton rackets which I last used about 20 years ago.
Going further back in time I've kept all the O' and A' level papers I sat in the 1960's and I've also still got all my uni Physics exam papers that I did.
I've still got my old school and uni slide rules and a set of log tables. For the benefit of most of you a slide rule was a wooden/plastic item used for multiplying and dividing numbers which also had trigonometric scales and scales for reciprocals, squares and exponentials etc. They were widely used by scientists and engineers before electronic calculators came along. Log tables were books of numbers which were used for calculation purposes and gave more accurate answers than slide rules.
What old stuff and junk have you've got that you just can't throw away ?

It took ages to reach the obvious conclusion that I was never going to use all my old hockey touring shirts. Oldest from 1982. They did burn well though.

Yes remember the slide rulers. When using them for a calculation we always wrote (SR) after the answer because they were only accurate to one decimal place after which you had to judge for yourself. The log tables made great bed time reading though

My son's football kit from when he was part of a really good 5-a-side team aged 12-13. He's now 18 and nearly 6 ft, but I still have it hanging in the wardrobe.
Also books, especially work related ones. I have hundreds and hundreds, some really obscure, but I just can't rid myself of the idea that if I chuck out one (lets say on late 18th century dye works in the Calder Valley area) , then all of sudden the week after my boss will ring up and say 'Hey, you'll never guess what, we've been asked to do some work on an old dye works dating to c.1780 near Halifax!'.
But it does do you the world of good to have a massive chuck out once a year - I find it a very liberating experience, and also brings in a bit of cash from e-bay, car boots etc.

Are you my long lost twin? I too still have my school slide rule (plus instructions) in the sideboard and my University Log Tables. (I used to use them at work when I was a bit bored to wind up my colleagues). I have a number of exam papers (plus my O & A Level exam timetables), a load of school exercise books, my University text books plus a load of 1970s football annuals, a full set of "childrens" encyclopaedias from the 1960s and 500+ copies of The Oatcake. My full set of 38 years worth of payslips and bank statements is probably a little extreme! I also have a 45 year old cricket bat and ball that I still occasionally polish (Ooo, err missus!!) I still have a suit I brought in 1977 (still fits) and a t-shirt from 1976 that I always wear once on holiday every year just to annoy my mother when she sees the photos. I have a very battered old wallet that still contains an old £1 note and a 1980 box of chocolates tucked away in a cupboard. Not surprisingly I still have my old vinyl record collection and the Hi-Fi separates I brought in 1986, which I guess means I am actually now quite trendy! Houston, I think I might have a problem!!!

Up here in the far north of Scotland Plutonium is transported by US C17 Boeing Globemaster planes to the Savannah River nuclear site in South Carolina. The runway at our local Wick John O'Groats airport was upgraded at a cost of millions of pounds to take these planes. It has been claimed by our local MP that in bound and outbound flights are routed via RAF Lossiemouth to be drained of some fuel to reduce their weight to enable landing at Wick before refuelling at Lossiemouth prior to heading back across the Atlantic.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the info. What do the local people in Wick think of it, do they have objections? Most people up here are not really bothered about the shipments of radioactive material by road, rail, sea or air. There is some concern in Wick about road closures near the airport when it is used to transport radioactive material. There is a group calling themselves Highland Against Nuclear Transport who say a lot but don't do much. There is more local concern over the spread of wind farms than the activities of the nuclear industries. For the last 60 years the economy of Caithness and Sutherland has been very reliant upon the reasonably well paid jobs provided by the civil and military nuclear sites we have and they have attracted people from all over Scotland and the rest of the UK ( including me - though sadly I've never met a fellow Stoke City supporter ). With the decommissioning of the civil site and run down of the military site the future of the local economy up here is very uncertain.
