Do they make the country more than they take away? I like to think it is good to preserve a unique part of british history which helps make our country great, and for me the royal family are an important part of our country and i don't see a problem with spending money on repairing their palaces.

A complete scandal. If it has to be done, perhaps Charles could make a contribution from his vast income from the Duchy of Cornwall? An estate that still doesn't pay corporation tax.
In a few hundred years kids will look back and laugh at us that we used to pay for these outdated accidents of birth to sit in a better standard of Gold.
Unbelievable.

Aah this old chestnut and it's just the party line that's forever trotted out to justify it Paris has no royal family but is the most visited tourist city in the world I get down to London on a regular basis , and even in the winter there are loads of tourists . Didn`t realise Paris had more tourists . I suppose we could not give them the money and turn the place into flats.

That wunner go far.
It's fuck all really where old buildings a concerned
It's British heritage so, I'm all for it.
Now, if it was hundreds of millions of British pounds spent on foreign aid.....ie Indian space agency etc then that's where I have a problem.

Maybe if the Olympic Stadium closes down, West Ham could move there, plenty of room in the garden for a game of Nogga...

Knowing and meeting many different people from around the world through work, I can tell you from my experience that the Royal Family are a huge part of this countries attraction and they are held in high esteem however it's definitely more so abroad than at home.

Founded in 1996, Brand Finance is the world’s leading independent branded business valuation and strategy consultancy. So you believe everything that a company 20 years old, tells you about the ins & outs of our Monarchy?

Whilst all the visitors who come to our country, just to visit the places of our Monarchy, swell the coffers of the government, so win win.

If we were a republic we would still be spending the money to preserve it

Its a tradition of ours so ok to do the outside up for the tourists to see but they should just have to slum it a bit inside. They can start making savings by getting shut of Sky tv!

If we were a republic we would still be spending the money to preserve it yes because it would be historical and there wouldn't be anyone else to fund it. as they're not historical and still exist and they ARE still around and worth billions, don't you think they should fund it rather than expecting us to, particularly during times of austerity and "We're all in it together" etc?

I'm fine with spending money on preserving the building. It's a piece of history that should be kept in top nick.
And once the family have left to allow the works to be done, change the locks and keep them out.
If you think the places makes the country money now, imagine how much we could make if the people were actually allowed in the building.
