Hope he gets well soon. Not as good as Sir Stan, Jimmy Mclroy or Denis Violet in my opinion. Never saw those three live. A bit before my time. Hudson was just simply the best player I have ever seen play for Stoke, without a shadow of a doubt. Both Mclroy and Violet could do all that Hudson could plus score goals. Thats what let him down. Stan well he was just Stan.

I just remember seeing him floating across the quagmire that was the Vic with the ball glued to his foot and I now wonder what he would have done on the carpets they play on now. I loved Jimmy Greenhoff but Hudson was different class. I remember the 'Jimmy Greenhoffs red and white army' versus 'Alan Hudson's red and white army' in the Boothen and I could never make my mind up who's side I was on ........ so I alternated. I was only 14.

Get Well Soon
Been going to Stoke since 1968. Its difficult comparing players from eras but,
The best I have ever seen by a long way. Brought tears of joy to me on many occasions. Brilliant player.
His debut against Liverpool was the best performance by any Stoke player Ive ever seen and he was consistently brilliant on very difficult pitches. He orchestrated games, took us to dizzy heights and so very nearly brought the League title to the Potteries.

Get well soon Alan. Your are a legend. You and Greenhoff made my heart start to beat for Stoke City FC back in 1974-75 in Norway.

Never tire of seeing footage of Huddy.
He just seemed to glide past opponents. Superb.

His debut against Liverpool was the best performance by any Stoke player Ive ever seen and he was consistently brilliant on very difficult pitches. He orchestrated games, took us to dizzy heights and so very nearly brought the League title to the Potteries. Bill Shankly described it as the best debut he had ever seen.
I was fortunate enough to go to one of Alan Hudson's book launches at Trentham. Nigel Johnson was hosting and mentioned that Shankly quote to Hudson, who replied with typical brash charm and style: "Well, I don't know how, cos I'd been on a 3 week bender!"
Much laughter. Huddy explained that he was so disillusioned about being let go by Chelsea, he'd drifted from pub to bar to club for the last 3 weeks. Met Waddo the week before who persuaded him to sign for Stoke.
For all his playboy boozer image, he worked incredibly hard at his fitness, which he reckons saved his life when he was involved as a pedestrian in his car accident.
Get well soon, Huddy. Be great to see him at Stoke again.

I'm sure I recall reading, a couple of years ago ( and I may have dreamed it, I hope so ) that he was now homeless and had only the clothes he stood up in at the time ???
Whilst I very much hope that isn't correct, if it is does anyone know if that situation improved ?

A Stoke legend if there ever was one. Get well soon Huddy! Just listened into a interview he did some time back on George Best. Huddy amazes me with his sharpness and his ability to recall so many good and indifferent memories of his bygone and footballing days considering his age and the amount of booze he must have downed over the years. Well worth an hour of your time if you're into the footballing stars of the 60's and 70's, and good footballing stories to boot (pun intended). Listen in here... Alan Hudson on George Best Enjoy!

One of the best players to play on the grass at the vic Erm...what grass? It was grass at the Vic, back in my day mate. Granted, not a lot of it, especially in the middle of the season after it had been well and truly cut up. More of a quagmire. That's what made the game more interesting to watch. Players sliding all over the place and mistimed tackles going on everywhere. You just never knew what was going to happen next.

Hudson for England Having played an outstanding game and a pivotal role in destroying the World Champions in this game somebody please tell how he only ever played for England twice. Absolutely criminal, especially considering some of clowns who have since got 20-30 caps! Hudson, Bell, Keegan, Todd, Watson .........we should have been world champions Bell, Ball and Hudson is probably the best midfield England have had on a pitch in the past 50 years

Just watched the Huddy interview video thanks for posting it. Hope all goes well for Huddy, he is back home in London, in a good hospital. My daughter worked there for 2 years. You can see Stamford Bridge from the top floor.
Great characters in those days George Best, Huddy, Rodney Marsh, Brian Clough, Shankly etc and of course Frank Worthington. Of whom it was said today on the radio. Whilst referring to a certain manager's ban on sex after midnight. "Frank had sex with 2 women in the shower while the rest of us were on the pitch warming up." I would like to think it was before this goal!
Never tire of seeing that.

Thanks for that, it's like watching a different game. No less skill or athleticism but no rolling round like they've been shot when fouled and absolutely NO grappling in the box. The Germans were dirty bastards mind.

Wasn't his second game a 0-0 against Cyprus??? He ran the show in that Germany match. I'm sure there was a quote from Gunter Netzer praising Huddy, but I may be mistaken (it does happen). Was that David Nish playing right back?

Just Googled him and he was from QPR. Recognise his face now. Crikey this all takes me back.

I have a feeling it might have been Der Kaiser himself, Franz Beckenbauer, who praised Alan Hudson's debut England performance against West Germany in 1974.

As I think someone has stated his only other game was a European Qualifier in which we beat Cyprus 5-0 with MacDonald getting all 5 and Huddy ran the show, made at least one of them, took most of the corners and free kicks, you can see the highlights of this on youtube. These were the only 2 games where Bell, Ball and Hudson lined up together.

In over half a century of watching football I haven't seen another team that was as dirty and cheated so much as Revie's LU, even if they could play brilliant team football.
