Personally, thin and crispy every time. I was offered as a snack today a doughy bready excuse that was more bread than topping. Difficult to eat and basically unpleasant. One of the benefits of living close to Bedford for a number of years was the abundance of fantastic Italian restaurants courtesy of an Italian community brought here to work in the brick industry during and after WW2. So instead of Pizza hut or Pizza Express etc the genuine article was readily available being run by 2nd and 3rd generation families. Are there any really good places that anyone could recommend in our neck of the woods of a similar heritage. Another brilliant by product was, and still is, the quality of the local ice cream vans and the atmosphere in town during Italia 90, party time.
Top meal then would be a seafood thin and crispy followed by a proper ice cream selection. Point me in the right direction.
PS. The coffee was shit hot as well.

Thin & crispy all day long.
Very interesting story about Bedford. I knew about the brick industry but not the Italian connection. I totally agree that these global pizza chains are awful - same dull formula in every location. Nothing more than production lines. No-one cares. You just cannot beat an authentic fresh pizza individually prepared and cooked by an authentic Italian chef.
I'm driving down to London next weekend to see my brother, so will definitely stop off in Bedford on the way back to check out the cuisine. I'll report back with my findings!

I can recommend Amici in St Peters Street (town centre) but a brief Google search will give some pretty good ideas. Hope you enjoy the trip.

Cheers for that. I've already checked online and liked the look of Pizzeria Santaniello, but will definitely take a look at Amici.
I don't know why anyone would go to the big chains when you can get the real deal for the same price (or even less) as well as full waiter service.
Looking forward to it now!

PS. The coffee was shit hot as well. In Naples, the home of pizza, it's a thin base with just cheese and tomato. If they're feeling a bit adventurous then maybe a few anchovies as well. If it's good enough for them then it's good enough for Mendicant

What about Roberto's up Hanley duck? Not been for a while but always enjoyed it there, bit more 'authentic'. They do a Turtle pizza too!

Thin & crispy every time, Chuff. I make my own pizzas as I can use my own tomato sauce + mozzarella, olives, smoked ham, artichoke hearts and loads of anchovies. Make ice cream, too: Coffee and chocolate are probably the best. ♫ 'Just-a one Chuffetto, geeve eet to meeeeee……..' ♫

What about Roberto's up Hanley duck? Not been for a while but always enjoyed it there, but more 'authentic'. They do a Turtle pizza too! Definitely agree, Cheesy. Used to go to the Theatre Royal up 'anley duck when it was still a theatre, and always paired trips with a meal at Roberto's - their Pizza Quattro Stagioni was sublime.
The many foodies on 'ere will already know this, but the name means 'Four Seasons Pizza' - the pizza is divided into four sections containing different ingredients, each quarter typifying a season of the year when those ingredients are at their best - eg. tomatoes for summer, mushrooms for autumn, etc. Not been to Roberto's for years and years, but it was always fabulous food.

Had an absolutely deeeelish pizza, literally one of the best I've ever had - in fact I rang them and told them so afterwards - from somewhere in Stone (a takeaway pizza place, not a restaurant) a couple of years ago - if I lived nearer to Stone I'd be in there a LOT - it really was THAT good. Can't remember its name but have G'd it and am sure it must be this one: PICCOLOS PIZZA 14 - 16 Stafford Street Stone ST15 8QW Tel. 01785 819 555 + 01785 819 888 piccolospizzaland.co.uk/pizza/index.htmlThey cook their pizzas to order and have the usual sort of selection, but they also include an option called 'Create Your Own Topping' with a wide range of toppings on offer. They also do a range of Calzone and Salads, plus other sorts of meals, and various extras. They have a delivery service to Stone and the surrounding areas.

I've been to Italy a few times recently, their freshly made pizzas are fantastic, freshly made and straight out of the wood burning pizz ovens. Thin and crispy for me, had one last night, home made all the way

Is that the one where you heat a slab of rock to a temperature similar to the surface of the sun then plonk the pizza on top. Followed by 30 seconds in the oven?.

Thin & crispy every time, Chuff. I make my own pizzas as I can use my own tomato sauce + mozzarella, olives, smoked ham, artichoke hearts and loads of anchovies. That sounds rate up my street. We make our own pizza, but as I'm the only one that does olives, artichokes or anchovies, they all get sacrificed for smoked bacon. Huge rashers of smoked bacon on mozzarella & tomato sauce. It's like a continental open bacon & cheese buttyXx
