Notwithstanding his footballing qualities which is an interesting and proper thing to discuss I cannot understand why some people seem to revel in the failure , perceived or otherwise, of young, developing, English players.

I revel in it, if that's how you want to put it, because the media have stuck him up high on a pedestal which many sane people have always thought was undeserved. So I'm laughing at them (and the mugs that spent £50m on him) as much as him. It's like when millions of us laughed in the face of Project Fear back in June, though I'm not going to discuss that on the Oatcake. It's also like, as many on here have said previously, the old story about the emporer's new clothes. In fairness to the lad, he didn't ask to be promoted as the future of English football but I still find it funny when he proves on a weekly or even twice weekly basis what a shite defender he is, even after a couple of years or more on that pedestal. I hope that's OK with you.

I'm certainly not revelling in it ....I'm just pointing it out He gets cut so much slack it's beyond comprehension as he's " still developing " we are told He's now TWENTY TWO not 18 and we've all seen many players get castigated by the media who are younger than him As somebody who follows England abroad I'd love nothing better than him to be what he's made out to be

What a shit thread.
I wonder if people are making ones on other forums entitled 'Imbula', because relatively speaking the outlay for both players compared to the club budgets are probably similar.

Like all players, John Stones is 'worth' what a club are prepared to pay to secure his services. This doesn't mean he is overrated.
"Transfer fee" ≠ "perceived worth" ≠ "talent" ≥ "potential".

Nah not revelling in it, I just find the hypocrisy amusing/astounding because I really do think he's a Championship level defender.

I dont disagree i dont think hes a dirty enough defender tries to rely on footballing his way out of trouble all the time and often just strolls into it. To be a great defender he needs to know when to whack it out or whack the opposition and i dont see enough of that from him, watch the great bobby moore or bekenbauer and the partnership of maldini and baresi at milan for as many or if not more times than they strolled or stroked the ball out of trouble ,they also smashed the ball or the opposition into row z. There is a dark art to defending and most only master that bit very few manage both the fancy football and the way of the sith, stones i feel is struggling to juggle both and should try the dirty side a bit more to build his game up

The British media are desperate to have players who they can promote as world class, at this moment in time there aren't any.
I've never understood the fuss around Stones. On the occasions that I've seen him he's always had a silly mistake in him. Not the best quality for a centre back.

Like Wezza said on another thread he's the most overhyped, overrated individual in football today oh no...... thats raheem sterling...... fkn awful footballer I might have agreed with you last season, but in fairness to Sterling , he appears to have turned over a new leaf this season under Guidiola and has added to his game by notching a few goals. In fact he did not look out of place against Barcelona , which is more than you could say about some of Citehs other expensive stars.

To be fair he did have a 100% pass completion rate back to his goalkeeper last night and when you pass back to the goalkeeper as often as Stones did last night that's pretty impressive.

He'd probably make a good defensive midfielder.
Just not good enough to be that last line of defence

He'd probably make a good defensive midfielder. Just not good enough to be that last line of defence I say exactly the same thing about David Luiz. Stones isn't a centre back in a million years, Shaqiri would be more effective there than Stones is.

Utter shite. Another England player who will do nothing but live off his "potential" until his late 20's, a la Theo Walcott.

For England's sake, I wish he was a great player, but he's not. Unfortunately, he may be the best available, which is not very encouraging.

His potential is vast, but his decision making lets him down over and over again!

For England's sake, I wish he was a great player, but he's not. Unfortunately, he may be the best available, which is not very encouraging. He's not though. Shawcross is 100 times the player. Cahill, Smalling and even Jones are better. Keane is better too.

I think he's just a bit thick to be a top player As Mark Stein proves you don't need a Mensa IQ of 150 to be a top player. I once counted 13 'like's' in a single Steino sentence.

I think he's just a bit thick to be a top player As Mark Stein proves you don't need a Mensa IQ of 150 to be a top player. Steino wasn't a top player in the grand scheme of things, though he was unlucky with his injury when he was going great guns with Chelsea, but most top top players are able to grasp various tactics, and they are clever enough to learn from the same fuck ups time after time.
