Sometimes, for no real reason you invest more hope in certain players than others.
Because of who he is and his status we all want shaqiri to be a success at Stoke. Also because we all fell in love with them when they came it seems we all want Muni and Bojan to flourish here maybe more than others we've signed.
On a stranger note I remember really wanting Hannes Sigurdsson to be a hit here. I don't know whether it was because his namesake Larus was so good or what. I think maybe I just hoped we'd signed a Scandinavian hit man in the mould of solskjaer and despite the evidence suggesting otherwise I held onto that hope up until we sold him!
Any other strange ones you've really wanted to succeed?

Probably Steven Ireland for me
Its infuriating as you know there is a good player in there for sure; the injuries are out of his hands but his attitude at times certainly is not.

Ole (Can't remember his last name!) Looked like a Mr. Potato Head but scored 4 goals in his first game at Stoke (a friendly?, youth game?). I thought we had unearthed a secret weapon!
Just checked, it was Ole Albrigtsen.

Michael Owen. Even at that particular stage of his career this was a marquee signing for us, but alas, Tony had other ideas...

Sidibe. He pretty much was a success but the more he got injured, the more I wanted to see him back.

Sidibe. He pretty much was a success but the more he got injured, the more I wanted to see him back. He'll always be slagged off by some but Sidibe was a massive success at Stoke. He played a certain role and he played it better than anybody else around. He could turn any long punt into a good ball. He would literally get a flick on anything and everything and he's part of the reason Ric looked so good. And what a song he had too!

Same. Given the managers limitations tho it was always going to be a long shot.

Paul Randall-like Carruthers disappointing, but a little less so.

Firstly, there was no-one else around. Secondly, he fucked up more balls up to him than he flicked on! Christ, if he was as good as you make out he would have been signed up by ManUre or someone! He fitted the bill for an unfashionable style of play and an unfashionable manager. I am not 'slagging him off', just saying it how it really was. The thread is entitled 'players you most wanted to succeed at Stoke' - Mama did succeed at Stoke, more than he did or ever could at any other club.

I was desperate for Riki Dadason to do well but he was just another in a long line of crushing disappointments that have punctuated my 54 years of supporting Stoke.
At the moment I really want Gianni Imbula to perform and hope I haven't cursed him simply by mentioning him in this thread.

Right now, more than a single player. I'd like to see the following line-up succeed.
Butland Muniesa, Shawcross, Indi, Pieters Imbula, Allen Shaqiri, Krkic, Arnautovic Bony.
Playing to it's fullest potential, I think we could give a view teams a hammering!

Michael Owen. Even at that particular stage of his career this was a marquee signing for us, but alas, Tony had other ideas... It was a fuckin joke that one. The player still had a few goals left in him but despite signing him, TP just didn't have confidence in him. Only one goal in the history books for us, when it really should have been half a dozen. Bet Owen massively regretted signing and probably talks about the time with us with as much enthusiasm as Bill Clinton would advertising cigars

How can you make out you don't know what I'm on about. Sobhi for Bojan , Shaq to No 10 and I'm in complete agreement.

Yeah, you're right - and that header against Barnsley in injury time for his first touch gave us all hope. But we are Stoke, so what, realistically, should be expect?

Ian Allinson, a bit of a coup for Mick Mills. At the time we were scratching around with sub 250k signing, so to get a high(ish) profile player from Arsenal was a positive move. It seems he (or his wife) got homesick pretty quickly, so he was packed off to Luton after nine games and no goals.
