Bony was playing better today, he needs to get match fitness, a goal would help his confidence, we were playing a poor side with excellent opportunities to score. If Bony was carrying an injury then Crouch was a better option. What was to be gained out of bringing on Walters?

He was clueless.

No idea mate and I'd add Adam to that question to.
Diouf up top and Bojan as the number 10 or Walters up top and Adam as the number 10?
Hmmm, let me think that through ... for a nano second.
EDIT: Oh I see Rob has posted the same thing at exactly the same time - sorry.

Someone I was talking to at half time gave a good analogy for Walters, reckons he's as effective as a crisp bag being blown about the pitch, hard to argue with really.

This sub absolutely baffled me.
Diouf has pace and would have got in behind the Sunderland back line.
Crouch is always a threat in the air which would have brought other players into the game.
Walters adds nothing! He made no impact to the game what so ever. No idea what sparky was thinking here.

Bizarre sub. I reckon Bony would've scored had he left him on. And why wouldn't you leave him on? Your main striker, struggling to get off the mark against a very poor side. Surely you leave him on and hope he gets his goal?

Glad it wasn't just me! Out of all the attacking options on the bench Walters is the last choice. Infact for me he shouldn't even be on the bench, Sobhi should take his place as genuine wing cover then you have Bony to start, Diouf as the pace option, crouch to go more direct and bojan to revert to false 9, why the need for Walters?
Ignoring all of that bony should of stayed on anyway, as stated above he was playing OK and needs a goal.
Walters must have some dodgy photos of Peter Coates or something there's no other explanation his last good came was in 2012.
Other than the Walters thing though a great team performance today!

Absolutely no idea. It was the only negative of the day.
Bony's quality highlighted just how shit Walters is.

Got to agree. Hughes subs are strange. There was a 4-0 there for the taking. I actually believe they settled for two.

I like SJW but he wasn't the right sub when we could have gone on to put a couple more past hapless Sunderland with a much-needed confidence boost for Bony, Bojan or Diouf.
However, 2-0 is 2-0 and with a run of winnable games ahead I'm not going to crucify Hughes for it...

I think the thought process was to try and keep the shape the same but with fresher legs. He could have bought on a Bojan, Diouf or whoever and it could have changed the whole flow of the game. If that happened and the game went the other way there would have been murders. As we were, we were well in control and solidly set up. We were creating situations and chances.
"Why risk changing the shape and personnel unduly and risk upsetting something that was clearly working on the day?"
The fact that Walters came on and looked like a ringer is quite another argument!

Shame Bony came off but I guess he is still building up his fitness.
I hate Walters witch hunt threads however there were three better options on the bench.
Adam is getting slower too however he can still pass and shoot, that effort at the end was a corker

Walters must have a massive "incriminating photo" album because that's the only logical reason why at this stage, he's even getting in the squad.

Was completely surprised that we didn't bring on Diouf so he could sprint past their backline. Walters should not have come on the pitch, but I know sooner or later Walters will come on, i'll be miffed hes on the pitch and he will score, he just has that habit.

No point. Give Bony the minutes he needs. He's a top striker just lacking confidence with his shooting. Similar to Defoe in style but more robust. He just needs to bag a goal.

Would have been the ideal time to give bojan some game time.finding himself behind walters in the pecking order must be doing wonders for his confidence.

Shocking decision from me. The movement of Allen and Bony was causing Sunderland all sorts of issues. Walters and Adam are just too slow. Whilst Adam has never been the cleanest of tacklers today he looked woefully behind play. Walters seems to have lead boots on and I dont really know what threat he carries.

Good win, steady performance against a side that offered very little. The afternoon did very little to convince me the manager has turned the corner.
