The West wanted to weaken Russia's influence in the area by taking Assad down, so they backed the rebels who morphed into ISIS. Putin decided that he was going to support Assad to keep his influence and started to bomb the rebels/ISIS. There are also Islamic factions joining in with the fun too.

I'm getting more cynical as I get older. The "West" should have picked a winner early on amongst the rebels and backed them to the hilt militarily and financially. Our half hearted shilly-shallying then aggravated things, encouraging the growth in support for the much better armed and initially more successful extremists.
The Russians have a strategically important naval base they will not give easily give up. I forget the name..

Syria has become the biggest cluster fuck I've known in my time - it makes Israel/Palestine look like a one-piece jigsaw. I hope for the sake of the Syrian people that something can be done to help stop the absolute destruction of their country.
